Bottom Line

This upscale hotel in quaint Newcastle attracts couples and families in equal numbers with its many on-site features such as several restaurants and bars, a spa complete with an indoor pool, and event spaces which are popular venues for weddings. Guests also have free access to country club facilities, but the real standouts here are the rooms. Spacious, and individually decorated in everything from stylish stripes to feminine florals, these up-to-date accommodations include free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs; DVD players are available upon request, as are mini-fridges, which are noticeably absent. Common spaces don't quite live up to the rooms, but are nonetheless well-kept.

Scene

Tons of meeting spaces are largely used for weddings and celebrations instead of conferences.

The Burrendale is certainly equipped to handle a slew of business travelers with its many meeting spaces, but instead it is mostly families and couples who stay here, as they are attracted to the quaint, peaceful location and numerous on-site activities. Due to the romantic setting, the hotel is a popular choice for weddings as well as honeymoons. Common spaces are a bit dated in comparison to the rooms, but it give the property overall a "grand dame" feel. Rooms, on the other hand, feature fun, modern decor.

Location

In quaint Newcastle at the foot of Mourne Mountains

The Burrendale can be found at the foot of the picturesque Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland's quaint Newcastle. The mountains provide popular trails for taking in County Down's gorgeous scenery, and the historic Dundrum Castle, a popular tourist attraction, is less than a 15-minute drive from the property. There's nearby golf courses and horseback riding as well. It's about an hour's drive to Belfast, where the closest international airport can be found.

Rooms

Spacious, stylish rooms

Not only does the Burrendale offer a range of room types -- everything from standard guest rooms to spacious suites to family rooms -- but they all feature slightly varying decor. While all are stylish, some are outfitted in purple florals, others in earth-toned stripes, and still others in more basic solid reds and golds. Each rooms comes with a large flat-screen TV and coffeemaker, and Wi-Fi and a full Irish breakfast are included in the rates. It's a nice perk that DVD players can be delivered free of charge, but it's odd that guests most request a mini-fridge (also free). Bathrooms are a bit more bland, but nonetheless modern and sufficient.

Features

Free use of country club facilities such as dozens of weekly classes

With free access to the country club, guests are never at a lack of things to do. On-site activities include everything from swimming in the spa pool to enjoying spa treatments, working out in the gym to joining one of dozens of fitness classes offered week, or even just relaxing on the lush grounds. The hotel also offers a popular afternoon tea, and several dining options -- a bar, a lounge, a fine-dining joint, and a free full Irish breakfast -- make for plenty of culinary choices. The hotel also has numerous event spaces; though meetings do take place at the hotel, these elegant spaces are more often used for weddings and special occasions.
