The spacious rooms -- with modern amenities, pillowtop mattresses, and sleek bathrooms -- are the highlight at this lovely budget-friendly property, which can offer incredibly reasonable rates because it is located in Long Island City. But its location -- on a desolate, warehouse-filled block -- is also its drawback. Amenities are minimal but include a small fitness center and 24-hour business center, as well as a local Italian restaurant.
Scene
The hotel attracts budget-minded guests, many of whom are in Long Island City to visit Manhattan.
Common spaces at this Wyndham are small, but guests can be found reading newspapers in the bright lobby, checking email in the business center (which is really just a computer in the basement), and working out in the fitness center. While the hotel is located in Long Island City, most guests are in the area to visit Manhattan, which is just one stop away on the subway (however, the subway is several blocks from the hotel, which does offer free shuttle service to the train). The Wyndham attracts a mix of business and leisure travelers, and most are content with the somewhat out-of-the-way, desolate location as a fair tradeoff for spacious, modern rooms and reasonable rates.
Location
In Long Island City, with views of Manhattan
In the Queens borough of New York City, Long Island City is within easy reach of Manhattan but has a much different vibe, especially on the block where this hotel is located. Right by the East River, and with great views of the island, the Wyndham shares its block with open lots and warehouses, making the area feel desolate and somewhat unsafe -- particularly at night. Taxis can be hard to come by, and the subway is several blocks away, but once on it, midtown Manhattan -- and many of its major attractions, such as Rockefeller Center -- are just one stop away.
Rooms
Spacious, modern rooms are the highlight.
Rooms at this midrange, budget property are simple but modern and up-to-date. Decor features furniture and accents in a calming silver-and-blue color scheme, as well as dark wooden details, and bathrooms are particularly sleek with big basin sinks and glassed-in showers. Beds have crisp white sheets and pillowtop mattresses, and large work desks are accompanied by comfortable leather office chairs. All rooms have coffeemakers, large flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi, and closets include irons and ironing boards as well as laptop-size safes. Some rooms offer sweeping views of the East River and Manhattan.
Features
Features are minimal.
A midsize property, with 128 rooms, the Wyndham does not offer many features for guests. Nonetheless, it does provide clean, simple amenities such as a small basement fitness center -- with three cardio machines and a rack of free weights -- as well as a business center, located in a dark corner of the basement, with a single computer. There is also free Wi-Fi throughout the property.Though the on-site Italian restaurant is privately owned, it largely caters to hotel guests and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It provides room service for every meal.
