Overview

Pros
  • Convenient location for major downtown tourist sights and up-and-coming nightlife

  • Free Wi-Fi and on-site laundry

Cons
  • More hostel than hotel

  • Cleanliness issues throughout hotel

  • Rooms are tiny, with few amenities, and many share bathrooms

  • No on-site amenities or services

  • No elevator

Bottom Line

The World Hotel should not be designated a hotel: It is a hostel, and not a good one. Cleanliness issues are apparent throughout the property, with heaping garbage bags in the stairwell and stains covering most surfaces. All rooms are small, and only some have private bathrooms. Most share bathroom space with others in the hall. There are no on-site amenities or features to speak of. Guests come here for the rates, which are among the lowest in Manhattan.

Scene

Budget-conscious travelers looking for a place to crash.

The World Hotel is barebones with no decoration and identical-looking hallways with linoleum floors and rows of room doors.

Location

Close to downtown sights and an up-and-coming nightlife scene

The World Hotel is located on the Bowery, one of Chinatown's main thoroughfares. Lined with old tenement buildings and a few cobblestone streets, Chinatown -- and its ever-shrinking neighbor, Little Italy -- offer cultural charm by way of instant immersion: Most restaurants and shops sell imported goods and the great majority of signs and storefronts advertise in Chinese. The neighborhood is also an up-and-coming nightlife destination, with nearby hot spots serving up pricey cocktails and thumping electronica to downtown scenesters. The neighboring Lower East Side is within walking distance, and features trendy restaurants and bars. The subway, which is two streets away, also offers easy access to other sites.

Rooms

Rooms are dirty and small with space for a bed and little else.

Rooms at the World Hotel have a bed and a TV and that's about all. Cleanliness and privacy are major problems. Linens and ceiling tiles have stains, and most rooms share bathrooms in the hallway that are in need of cleaning. Thin walls throughout the hotel mean that guests can hear everything.

Features

Free Wi-Fi is the hotel's standout feature.

On-site laundry and hot water are also available.
