Limited tourist attractions within walking distance (but subways nearby)
The Gershwin Hotel has a lot of promise. It came under new management in 2013 and began a top-to-bottom makeover (slated to end sometime in 2014) that will turn the hotel from a basic, affordable option into a stylish boutique. Charming Beaux Arts design accents point to the hotel’s rich history, and clean rooms have flat-screen TVs, Frette linens, and C.O. Bigelow toiletries. The amenities and overall ambiance will improve after renovations are complete. tag:revisit 7/1/2014
Scene
A clean, affordable hotel on its way to becoming a stylish boutique
The Gershwin dates back to 1903, and its charming Beaux Arts architecture (and famously eccentric facade) impress. Interior decor is stylish and playful, with nods to the past (such as the framed renderings of historic New York). Located in the heart of the Flatiron District, the Gershwin is steps away from Madison Square Park, the original site of Madison Square Garden. Back in the day, the hotel was known for attracting opera singers and other performers visiting the nearby venue.
Today, the Gershwin celebrates this history with a selection of well-curated art and on-site theater performances. The stylish ambiance is currently at odds with the hotel’s ongoing renovations that -- while very promising in their breadth and design -- make for a slightly disruptive stay. tag:revisit 7/1/2014
Location
In the heart of the Flatiron District, near Madison Square Park
This Flatiron hotel is only one block away from the small, but lovely, Madison Square Park (in an area of Flatiron dubbed NoMad, or North of Madison Square Park). There are a few major tourist attractions within walking distance, including the Empire State building, and nearby subway lines can take guests to Midtown East’s business district, the tourist attractions of Times Square and Midtown West, and the downtown nightlife and shopping in SoHo, Chelsea, and the East Village.
Rooms
Clean rooms with pre-war style
Rooms at The Gershwin combine clean, modern lines with the building’s pre-war details in a simple but charming fashion. The hotel features a variety of room types -- some a tad small, but most well-sized by New York City standards -- with suites available for families. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and Frette linens. Bathrooms vary in configuration and size, but do feature C.O. Bigelow toiletries.
Expect head-to-toe changes to all rooms when renovations are complete. tag:revisit 7/1/2014
Features
A small business center, but not much else -- yet tag:revisit 7/1/2014
Features are sparse at the Gershwin, with no fitness center or restaurant currently on premises. The hotel does offer a small business center in the lobby, as well as concierge service and discounted parking. The hotel also hosts events on-site, such as opera productions, as a reminder of the hotel's star-studded past.
