Bottom Line

This former apartment building offers 30-day stays (or more) for corporate and leisure guests who require a temporary home in the Big Apple. The location near the water in Midtown East is suited to those who prefer a somewhat quieter neighborhood close to Midtown hospitals and corporate offices. The nondescript brick tower blends in with its residential neighbors and rises 33 floors (the higher the unit the better the view) and units (mostly studios and one-bedrooms) are contemporary, with king beds, pull-out couches, living/dining areas, and stainless-steel kitchens. Access to a nice lobby and courtyard, a fitness center, and a private mailbox are included in the price, but laundry, Wi-Fi and regular housekeeping cleanings will cost extra.

Scene

Homey environs appeal to corporate travelers and those in transition

The property's entrance on a tree-lined street in Midtown East does not stand out much, but inside, guests will find a low-lit front desk area with dark wood paneling and contemporary seating areas. A hallway leads to a bigger lobby space with more seatings arrangements around a fireplace, which is lit during the cooler months. A flat-screen TV here is usually playing sporting events or news. The entire first floor feels spacious and homey, and there are books left behind by former guests up for grabs, as well as daily copies of USA Today. Natural light pours in from the floor-to-ceiling windows, and an adjacent brick courtyard has a few tables; in the warmer months this area is planted with green shrubs and flowers. This outdoor space is open from morning 'til night and smokers are welcome to puff here; for non-smokers, cleanliness is respected and the ground is kept butt-free.The majority of guests who stay here are from the U.S. and even NYC (locals in transition due to home renovations or divorce), but the building does attract its fair share of foreigners coming in for corporate travel or surgeries at one of the nearby hospitals. Since Midtown East is not trendy or hopping by any means, many choose to stay here for a bit more peace, quiet, and convenience. Since there are only four units per floor, neighboring noise is not usually a problem, and during the week -- especially when people are at work -- is when guests practically have full run of the fitness center, lobby, and courtyard.

Location

A quieter area of Manhattan for easy access to Midtown offices and hospitals

The Sutton Court tower is located on 57th Street between Sutton Place and 1st Avenue in Midtown East. Though it is not the most subway-friendly area, guests willing to walk will find that the 53rd street E, M and 59th Street 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R trains are less than 15 minutes away. City buses run along 1st and 2nd Avenues. Cabs are easy to grab from 1st Avenue, and they often can be found along 57th Street as well. The front desk is manned by staff 24 hours a day, and staff members can also call for a taxi. This tucked away area of Midtown is quieter due to it being a residential area (and close to several key hospitals in NYC), but lower floors still might experience traffic and emergency vehicle noise from 1st Avenue. The higher the floor, the better the views -- those who are staying on floors 21 and above might have direct views of the Roosevelt Island tram, Queensboro Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and/or the East River. There are plenty of grocery stores, drug stores, cafes, and delis nearby. The area is definitely not for those seeking nightlife, but there are restaurant and bars within walking distance.

Rooms

Fully furnished apartments have big windows, carpeting, and renovated bathrooms

This tower rises 33 floors high but it is narrow with only four units per floor -- mostly studios and one-bedrooms, but there are some two-bedroom units as well. Spacious units have large windows to let in natural light and city views. Decor is not high-design by any means, but it is contemporary and comfortable with earthy tones (sages, beiges, and plums), bright paintings, and soft carpeting. All have living/dining areas (studios have dining tables for two people, while the one-bedrooms have space for four). Modern bathrooms have backsplash tiling and tub/shower combos. Each bathroom has one bathrobe only, and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries -- though toiletries are only replaced during the bi-weekly cleanings. Units come with work desks and chairs, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. Wi-Fi is available but does cost a fee.Full kitchens have hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances (stovetops, ovens, dishwashers, microwaves), coffeemakers, toasters, cooking utensils and complete dining sets for four people.

Features

Great amenities for those seeking a sense of comfort and routine

Wi-Fi is not free, but there is a stand-up desktop computer free to use. The building is also equipped with mailboxes for each unit, and guests are able to use the address to receive USPS mail and packages (each tenant is given a key during check-in).
In the basement level, there's a small but clean fitness center with cardio machines, yoga balls, weights, and two flat-screen TVs that are shared.
