Bottom Line

This budget option with 72 comfortable, modern rooms has some amenities that other value hotels in Brooklyn may lack, such as a (small) fitness center and (limited) free parking. But it is a bit far from Manhattan in a less-desirable neighborhood that is characterized by warehouses and auto-body shops -- and not so much of that Brooklyn charm that some come to the borough for.

Scene

A value-minded option that is modern in style, but the shabby locale is a bit of a hike from the city.

If you’re looking for a taste of Brooklyn flavor (beyond graffiti-strewn billboards) or a super-quick ride to Manhattan, then look elsewhere -- you won’t find either here, and other value hotels in Brooklyn accomplish both while still keeping a reasonable price tag. However, if it’s an inexpensive deal you seek (and you don’t mind a few extra minutes on the subway), or a last-minute place to lay your head, then you will find modern rooms with up-to-date bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. The hotel sees a mix of tourists, families, and lots of international guests, the manager noted. The lobby isn’t big or fancy, but there are a few nice sofas to chill on if waiting for a friend, as well as a sparkly chandelier and plenty of light in the daytime.

Location

This area of Brooklyn is a mix of industrial and residential, with many auto-body shops and a noisy highway looming overhead.

Located just south of the neighborhood of South Park Slope and two blocks from the industrial Gowanus Canal, the hotel is in a shabby, warehouse-strewn area that feels far away from the quaint, brownstone vibe that characterizes other parts of Brooklyn. The street is a mix of residential and industrial, including many auto-body shops and trucks on the block, which add to the street noise that is already coming from the highway looming above -- the hotel sits in the shadow of the Gowanus Expressway. There’s not much to see in walking distance, and dining options are limited to a few fast-food joints nearby. The subway station is just a five-minute walk away, from which it will take about 40 minutes to reach the big sights in Manhattan.

Rooms

Comfortable beds, modern style, and amenities that include mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs

The rooms at the Sleep Inn are modern, with comfortable beds, updated bedding, and flat-screen TVs. All furniture and furnishings are are contemporary in style, however wear and tear is present on many pieces, such as scratches and dings on the tables and dressers. Rooms vary in size - some have adequate space, while others are cramped. There is one spacious King Suite with a pull-out sofa bed. All rooms include coffeemaker and mini-fridges. The smallish bathrooms have nice tile and countertops. A few of the rooms on the fifth floor have jetted tubs, and corner rooms feature modern stand-up showers with a glass wall. Some views from upper floors offer a glimpse of the Freedom tower or the Empire State building on clear days, though the skyline looks far away.

Features

Wi-fi and basic breakfast are included, while small fitness room and even smaller parking lot offer limited value.

The Sleep Inn features free Wi-Fi and a free continental breakfast, with offerings such as cereal, yogurt, pastries, and waffles. There is a small, basic fitness center, which as with the breakfast room, is located in the basement level of the hotel, making them both kind of dark and gloomy. The “business center” consists of one computer and printer in the breakfast area. There are eight parking spaces right in front of the hotel entrance, where guests can park for free, but the crowded, first-come first-served lot fills up quickly. The manager says that plenty of free street parking is available, including under the highway overpass on the next block -- if you are brave enough to venture there.
