Conveniently located just south of Times Square, the Marriott-owned Moxy NYC is anything but chain hotel fare with its buzzy social vibe and trendy decor. In fact, the upper-middle-range property feels far more Downtown hip than its touristy Midtown surrounds. A bevy of cool common spaces include a funhouse-themed rooftop bar, an upscale seafood brasserie, a sleek lobby bar, loungy co-working spaces, and an egg-centric sandwich shop. There’s even a barber shop (with free cocktails) and a 24-hour gym with seasonal rooftop fitness classes. The Moxy’s 612 rooms are design-savvy but small, and even though they make efficient use of space with foldaway furniture, they can still feel cramped -- plus soundproofing is poor. Tech-savvy features include handy USB ports, Bluetooth-enabled sound bars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen cable TVs set up for personal screen casting via popular platforms like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, and Pandora. Open pegboard closets, plus foldaway desks, luggage racks, benches, and chairs channel Ikea with their practicality, but may not appeal to everyone. All rooms come with climate control, safes, hairdryers, and garment steamers. Note that noise from the rooftop and always-busy Seventh Avenue can be an issue, so the free earplugs can come in handy.
