Bottom Line

Metro Apartments is a converted apartment building located on a deserted street one block from the Lincoln Tunnel in Hell's Kitchen. The hotel has some nice perks: Rooms are spacious, featuring full kitchens, flat-screen TVs, and (in some) balconies. Room sizes range from studios to two-bedrooms, making this a good option for families or large groups of friends. But as the rooms vary in size, they also vary in quality. While most feature modern, streamlined design, a few are dark and showing minor wear. There are no property features aside from laundry facilities, but for extended stay guests hoping to stay in Midtown West, this is a solid, affordable option.

Scene

A converted apartment building in Hell's Kitchen

A converted apartment building, Metro Apartments does have some nice perks. The lobby is bright, with wooden floors and leather couches. Free coffee and tea is available here throughout the day. There is some inconsistency in the rooms, however; many are modern and attractive, but a few are dark and showing a bit of wear. Considering the size of the rooms, the kitchens, and the proximity to Times Square, the property offers decent value for families and extended stay guests. But if apartment-style facilities are not a must, visitors can more style and lower rates at the nearby Yotel and The Out NYC. It's also worth comparing rates with The Westin New York at Times Square and the InterContinental Times Square, which have more central locations.

Location

Located in Hell's Kitchen, overlooking the Lincoln Tunnel

Though near the tourist sights of Midtown West (Times Square and its fifteen subway lines are less than a 10-minute walk away) the street that houses Metro Apartments feels cut off from that neighborhood's charms. The hotel is located in Hell's Kitchen on West 41st Street, past the Port Authority and closer to the West Side Highway. Several rooms overlook the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel. Traffic leading to the tunnel can be heavy, causing some noise complaints, but beyond that the immediate area feels deserted.

Rooms

Full kitchens, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi are perks, but rooms lack consistency in terms of style

All of the apartment-style are spacious, especially by New York City standards, and come with full kitchens, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Some have balconies. Various room configurations (including studios as well as one- and two-bedrooms) make this a convenient stay for families or large groups. Most rooms have streamlined modern design and bright airy spaces, but some are dark and showing a bit of wear. Even the room numbers are oddly inconsistent: Some are painted above the door, others are etched on, while others consist of flash cards taped to the door.

Features

Laundry facilities -- and that's it

Hotel features are few. The lobby does feature free coffee and tea throughout the day, but there is no restaurant, fitness center, or business center. Laundry facilities are available on the second floor.
