Bottom Line

The 100-room La Quinta Inn is a practical choice for budget or business travelers who want to base themselves in Queens. Room rates are low, and some come with whirlpool hot tubs. Breakfast is free and there's on-site parking, making it a convenient choice for those with their own cars. However, the area is noisy and not particularly pleasant -- guests in town for sightseeing may prefer to fork out a bit of extra cash for a hotel in Manhattan, especially if they want to be within walking distance to attractions.

Scene

Simple budget property with bright lobby popular as a crash pad for visitors to Queens and Manhattan

With gold-chrome railings and polished checkerboard floors, the small but bright lobby of this La Quinta Inn is mostly quiet, save for the occasional guest waiting for a room or watching TV on the light-brown leather couches. The breakfast room, located in a sub-level, sees the most action in the morning, and while some tourists use it as a base for visiting Manhattan attractions, the hotel mostly serves just as a place to sleep for travelers who plan to spend most of their time outside of the hotel.

Location

A noisy, gritty area between Long Island City and Sunnyside, but near a subway

In a gritty neighborhood straddling the line between the Queens neighborhoods of Long Island City and Sunnyside, the hotel shares a block with an abandoned furniture outlet and lies across from a McDonald's and a self-storage building. The hotel looks up at elevated train tracks and is right on busy Queens Boulevard -- most people who pass by the area do so only on their way to somewhere else. It's a two-block walk to the 7 Train and a 20-minute ride to Grand Central Terminal. LaGuardia Airport is 15 minutes by car and JFK takes half an hour to reach.

Rooms

Standard rooms with lots of storage space, some with in-room whirlpool hot tubs

Rooms are spacious, given the low room rates, and come with a large amount of storage space in the form of cherry-wood wardrobes and chests of drawers. There are matching writing desks and beds have the same color headboard, with white linens and pale gray throws.  All come with free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and ironing board, but lack safes. Some King Rooms come with a two-person whirlpool hot tub right in the bedroom. Bathrooms feel cramped and have shower/tub combos and low-grade toiletries. The noise from Queens Boulevard and the elevated train may be noticeable to those staying in rooms facing the front. From some windows, guests can just make out the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building from above the bland, gray rooftops of Long Island City.

Features

Free breakfast, small business center, and sparse gym

The La Quinta Inn has a small, free business center off the lobby with two computers and a rack of brochures about New York City tourist activities. The hotel's gym is free but sometimes has to be unlocked by the front desk, and is sparsely equipped but adequate for a single night and has an exercise bike, a treadmill, and a single weight machine. The hotel's best feature is arguably its large breakfast room with four-top tables where a free buffet breakfast with hot waffles and plenty of cereals is served for free every morning. The hotel also rents out a 50-person meeting room, which comes with a large, pre-mounted dry-erase board for presentations.
