Bottom Line

The 487-room Hyatt Centric Times Square is an upscale hotel with an excellent central location for tourists and business travelers. The guest rooms are modern, with special touches such as geometric print chairs and framed art prints; they also include flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and sleek bathrooms. The hotel's crowning feature is the rooftop bar, which has great views of the city, but expensive cocktails. Other on-site amenities include an American restaurant, spa and salon, 24-hour fitness center, and free Wi-Fi. Valet parking is pricey and elevators can be slow, but overall, this is a great pick. The W New York Times Square has similar amenities and is sometimes less expensive.

Scene

Modern chain hotel with a happening rooftop bar

Opened in 2013, the Hyatt Centric Times Square is a chain property with a little personality. The lobby has a black, wooden slat ceiling, marble floors, and a colorful print behind the front desk. The seating area is just a couple of leather couches and chairs though, so don't expect to lounge or mingle in this area. Most guests, who are a mix of families, couples, and business travelers, spend their time at the hotel in the rooms or at the popular rooftop lounge Bar54. Prices there are quite steep for drinks (even by New York standards), but the views are excellent and there's both indoor and outdoor seating. There's also a retro-inspired restaurant, T45, with striped walls, leather booths, and a grab-and-go counter.

Location

Excellent location for travelers who want to be in tourist-filled Times Square

For tourists who want to see sights such as Times Square and Rockefeller center, the hotel's location is smack dab in the middle of the action. It's located on 45th Street, between Avenue of the Americas and 7th Avenue, near dozens of Broadway theaters and restaurants. Despite the busy location, guests report that the rooms are quiet. Radio City Music Hall is a seven-minute walk away, Bryant Park is a six-minute walk, and the TKTS Times Square is a four-minute walk. The location is also ideal for business travelers who will be working in Midtown. The Times Square subway station is a quick five-minute walk from the hotel. There is valet parking available for a daily rate, but it's quite pricey and doesn't allow in and out privileges.

Rooms

Well-appointed rooms and suites, with modern decor, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers

There are 487 guest rooms at the Hyatt Centric Times Square, 49 of which are suites. As there are 54 stories and only 11 rooms per floor, waits for the elevator can be long. At 325 square feet, Standard Rooms are bigger than most in New York City (the average hotel room size is around 200 square feet). All are decorated in a similar, modern style: wooden platform beds with wooden headboards, white bedding, light wooden dressers and desks, olive green carpeting, and ergonomic chairs. Fun, contemporary touches include colorful geometric-print chairs, framed modern art prints (such as a collection of polaroids), and wooden balloon dog decor pieces. Flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, in-room safes, and empty mini-fridges come standard. Suites have a separate sitting area and an espresso machine.Standard bathrooms have sleek black walls, and feature walk-in glass showers with a rainfall showerhead. Higher room categories have a shower and separate bathtub. All have KenetMD toiletries, hairdryers, and bathrobes available upon request. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, but views vary. Rooms with a small furnished terrace are also available.

Features

A trendy rooftop bar, casual restaurant, spa, fitness center, and meeting rooms

There are several quality on-site features at the Hyatt Centric Times Square. Most popular is Bar54, the rooftop bar and lounge with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the city. Open from around 4 p.m. to late, it serves a variety of alcoholic drinks and small plates. For a heartier meal, T45 is open for all three meals in a casual setting. It serves dishes such as an egg white veggie wrap, bacon cheeseburger, and kimchi fried rice. Room service is available from morning until late. The Timeless – Marilyn Monroe Spa is a spa and salon with a variety of treatments available, including massages, facials, manicures, and make-up application. The large 24-hour fitness center has cardio and strength training machines, and free weights. For business travelers, there's a 24-hour business center and meeting/event spaces available.
