Bottom Line

The Comfort Inn Brooklyn's main purpose is convenience. Located across from a gritty train yard, the 77-room budget hotel provides the bare necessities for those who want to explore a more low-key borough of the Big Apple. Just a few blocks from the N, R and D train station, Comfort Inn's biggest perk is affordable rooms located a 20-minute train ride from lower Manhattan. Inside the hotel, there isn't a fitness facility or full restaurant, but guests can expect free Wi-Fi, daily hot breakfasts, morning newspapers, and first-come, first-serve free parking. Rooms may show a little wear here and there, but they are consistently tidy and have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. For those who want to be in the heart of Brooklyn, check rates at the Comfort Inn Brooklyn - Downtown.

Scene

Quaint and quiet with no frills

The Comfort Inn Sunset Park/Park Slope may not be a first choice for a luxurious stay, but it makes for an affordable crash pad for those who want to explore Brooklyn and Manhattan. The intimate chain hotel is an example of "what you see is what you get." Upon entering the building, which is tucked away on a side street across from a graffiti tagged train yard and highway exit, the elevator and stairs to the rooms are immediately visible. The tiny lobby holds just a blue couch, dangling chandelier, and framed picture of the Manhattan skyline. The upstairs breakfast area is slightly cheerier and has large windows for natural light.

Location

Right outside of Brooklyn's bustling downtown area

Manhattan is typically the point of interest for a New York visit, but the borough of Brooklyn is second in command. Comfort Inn, located three blocks away from the D, N, and R trains, provides access to both boroughs via the subway system. It's about a 15-minute ride to Barclays Center and 20 minutes to lower Manhattan. Aside from a few delis and a McDonald's, there isn't much in the immediate vicinity and the neighborhood is more industrial than residential.

Rooms

Clean with all the basic necessities

The three types of rooms offered at the Comfort Inn -- King, Queen, and Double Bed -- look pretty generic. They all follow a standard neutral color scheme with brown and cream curtains and busily patterned chairs and carpets. Beds are made up with tan comforters and a navy blue throw. Flexible reading lamps and variety of soft and firm pillows on every bed add a nice touch. All rooms come standard with free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, coffeemaker, and mini-fridge. Bathrooms feature shower/tub combos and have a horizontal tile pattern on the walls. The bathroom mirror is framed in gold. Some rooms overlook the train yard across the street. Cleanliness isn't an issue but some rooms show visible patch work on the ceiling and walls.

Features

Free parking, breakfast, and Wi-Fi

Don't expect more than the basics inside the hotel, but what's on offer is included for free which helps keep costs low at a value hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and there's a printer and computer for guests to use. The daily breakfast includes a waffle maker and variety of cold cereals. A limited amount of free parking is available next to the hotel.
