  • Free hot and cold breakfast served in a modern, spacious dining room

  • Two blocks from the subway line with express service to Manhattan

  • Free parking, based on availability

  • Rates more affordable than at comparable hotels in Manhattan

Cons
  • Parking is limited to just 13 spots and is first-come, first-served

  • The hotel is located on a desolate, grimy block of Atlantic Avenue

  • The noisy elevated LIRR train is directly across the street from the hotel

  • No on-site restaurant or room service

  • Most rooms have unappealing views of either the train tracks or parking lot

Bottom Line

This 54-room hotel is a modern oasis in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood. Budget-conscious travelers might be able to overlook the undesirable location, directly across the street from the Nostrand Avenue elevated LIRR train station on a desolate block of Atlantic Avenue, in exchange for affordable rates and free amenities such as breakfast, Wi-Fi, a fitness center, and parking. The hotel's clean brand-name rooms and contemporary style are upsides, but it may be worth comparing rates with the Comfort Inn Brooklyn Bridge, which has a better location. While the location just south of Bed-Stuy is a bit dicey at night, the subway to Manhattan is two blocks away. It's also possible to walk to cuter parts of Brooklyn, such as Clinton Hill (20 minutes) and Prospect Park in Park Slope (25 minutes).

Scene

A modern, comfortable hotel suitable for budget-conscious businesspeople and explorers

The hotel's two-story lobby is bright and airy, outfitted with a sleek art-deco style chandelier, marble floors, contemporary seating, and a business center nook with two computers and a printer. The adjacent breakfast area is a spacious, quiet place with modern tables and chairs, ideal for settling down with your laptop and a cup of tea to check email via the hotel's free Wi-Fi. The hotel's autumnal color palette of moss green, gold, brown, and rust provides a soothing contrast to the gray and gritty urban ambiance outside the front door.

Location

In the transitional Crown Heights neighborhood, close to Bedford-Stuyvesant, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Barclays Center, Brooklyn Children's Museum, and the Botanic Gardens

The spiffy brick-clad, five-story hotel is a bright spot along a bleak stretch of Atlantic Avenue paralleled by the elevated LIRR train tracks. In contrast, around the corner, Nostrand Avenue is a bustling commercial strip packed with bodegas, no-frills Indian restaurants, delis, liquor stores, and florists. Visitors can walk two blocks north to access the A and C subway line, which provides express service to Manhattan. The Children's Museum is a 10-minute walk away, while the Botanic Gardens and the Prospect Park Zoo are accessed via a quick cab ride (or half-hour walk).- 30-minute drive, or 50-minute subway ride to JFK Airport

  • 30-minute drive, or 90-minute subway ride to LaGuardia Airport
  • Five-minute walk from A and C subway lines, two-minute walk to LIRR station
  • 30-minute subway ride to Pennsylvania Station, 15-minute ride (7 stops) to downtown Manhattan
  • five-minute drive, or 15-minute subway ride to Barclay's Center
  • 10-minute walk to Brooklyn Children's Museum
  • Six-minute drive, or 17-minute subway ride to Brooklyn Botanic Garden
  • Six-minute drive, or 20-minute subway ride to Brooklyn Museum
  • Eight-minute drive, or 20-minute subway ride to Prospect Park Zoo

Rooms

Tidy, modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-refrigerators, and cotton robes

While font-facing rooms feature double-paned windows, and glimpses of the city skyline (from the top floor), the train noise is bothersome for some guests. Light sleepers should request rooms at the back of the hotel, which overlook the parking lot. The consistent, basic design features cream-colored walls, saturated gold-tone carpets, and generic landscape artwork. Beds are outfitted with plump pillows and crisp, white duvets topped with coordinating throws and colorful accent pillow rolls. Mahogany stained wood headboards and coordinating furniture show a few nicks from wear. The stark white-tiled bathrooms feature Aroma brand soap and lotion with bath products refilled in containers affixed to the walls of the tub/shower. Notable extras include flat-screen LG TVs, microwaves, mini-refrigerators, Cuisinart coffeemakers, and iHome clock/radios. Cotton robes and safes are additional conveniences.

Features

Well-equipped for a budget hotel

The Best Western Plus Arena helps compensate for its not-so-fabulous location with a slew of amenities. Mornings start with a free breakfast of hot and cold items that include a variety of hot beverages, juices, three types of cereal, fruit, baked items, and pancakes, cranked out in a nifty automatic pancake machine. A small but adequate fitness center and a business center nook in the lobby are open to guests 24 hours. Other niceties include free Wi-Fi, free (although limited) parking, and 400 square feet of meeting space.
