Bottom Line

The 414 Hotel is a 22-room boutique in Midtown West, along a quiet, tree-lined stretch of Restaurant Row (a popular area for pre-theater diners). Times Square and its eight subway lines are a short walk away, as are Broadway's main shows, making this a convenient stay for tourists. But the hotel also feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of NYC -- a vibe created by the homey nature of the hotel. Two historical town houses make up the 414; rooms in both buildings are bright, airy, and modern, with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and mini-fridges. Many face the hotel's charming courtyard, where guests can enjoy the hotel's free continental breakfast and evening wine and cheese in warmer months. Guests who need an elevator (414 Hotel does not have one) might prefer the French Quarters Guest Apartments, a nearby boutique hotel with an elevator and a popular on-site restaurant serving Creole-style cuisine.

Scene

Homey boutique hotel spread over two historical town houses

Occupying two historical town houses, 414 Hotel is filled with old New York character. Guests feel like they're stepping back in time as they approach the brick facade on a quiet stretch of West 46th Street. Though it's near major and ever-crowded tourist sights, the hotel has a cozy, peaceful vibe. The lobby is small, with a fireplace and a dining table where guests can eat the free continental breakfast each morning. There is also a small kitchen where guests can get coffee and tea throughout the day, as well as a few snacks. The private, picturesque courtyard feels completely removed from the big city.

Location

Central location near Times Square and close to major theaters

The 414 Hotel is located on a quiet stretch of West 46th Street, just west of Restaurant Row (between Eighth and Ninth avenues) and a short walk from Times Square. The hustle and bustle of NYC is close at hand, and yet feels miles away in this area surrounded by restaurants and cafes. And yet, the TKTS booth, where same-day theater tickets are available for up to 50 percent off, is just a five-minute walk away, as are most of the major theaters themselves. The area is a convenient base for exploring the city’s sights, both on foot and via public transportation. - Nine-minute walk to Times Square and its numerous subway lines

  • 10-minute walk to Bryant Park and the New York Public Library
  • 17-minute walk to Columbus Circle (the traffic circle at the southwestern corner of Central Park)
  • 17-minute walk to Rockefeller Center
  • 19-minute walk to New York City Center and Carnegie Hall

Rooms

Bright, contemporary rooms with plush white bedding

The 22 rooms at the 414 Hotel are spacious, especially by New York City standards, and have large windows that let in tons of natural light. King and Queen Premier rooms face the internal courtyard, whereas Classic King, Queen, and Twin rooms face 46th Street and are generally a tad less expensive due to noise from the street below (there are a handful of courtyard-facing Classic Queen rooms). However, the quiet block is actually quite charming and noise isn't as intense as in other parts of the neighborhood.Rooms aren't extravagant, but they are clean and airy -- they feel like they could belong in a friend's stylish apartment rather than a hotel. Low-VOC paint and natural-fiber carpeting cover the walls and floor. Beds with comfortable Sealy mattresses are framed by attractive contemporary murals. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and fully stocked mini-fridges. Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and throughout the hotel. Bathrooms are spacious, with shower/tub combos and Q-tips, cotton balls, and make-up pads in addition to the usual hotel toiletries.

Features

Charming courtyard and surprising freebies

The private courtyard separating the two town houses is charming, with lots of beautiful plants and places to sit. Guests often eat breakfast here -- the hotel provides a free continental spread daily. Expect a selection of cereals, bagels, breads, English muffins, yogurts, and fruit, as well as cream cheeses, Nutella, peanut butter, jellies, and cottage cheese. An evening happy hour is also free, with wine, cheese, and crackers. There are no other major amenities to speak of: No fitness or business centers (though the hotel will assist with business needs), nor is there a restaurant on-site. However, a small kitchen off the lobby is stocked with free coffee, tea, and snacks throughout the day. There is no elevator. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the hotel.
