Scene

A quiet boutique property with simple, Old World elegance

Originally built as a hotel in 1916, the building that stands today as The Lafayette Hotel has changed hands a number of times, but has always been well maintained and has kept its original historic charm. Elegant chandeliers greet guests in the lobby, and the gold color scheme that runs throughout the hallways evokes a nostalgic, Old World feel. There’s not a lot of space to linger in the lobby, so aside from guests checking in or checking out, the property feels quiet most of the time. The exception is Mardi Gras time -- given the property’s prime location with balconies overlooking St. Charles Avenue, the city’s main parade route, the hotel comes alive every spring. Stray beads can be spotted in the trees out front or on the hotel’s glass awning even after the parades end, giving guests a constant reminder of the city’s vibrant personality. The streetcar passing directly in front of the hotel gives the hotel even more of an authentic NOLA vibe, making it a good choice for guests who want a hotel with some local flavor.

Location

On the St. Charles streetcar line in the city’s Central Business District

The Lafayette Hotel offers easy access to many of the city’s most popular neighborhoods and attractions. Set on busy St. Charles Avenue in the Central Business District, overlooking Lafayette Square, the hotel is within a 10-minute walk from several offices and courts. The St. Charles streetcar line passes directly in front of the hotel, taking guests to the middle of the Garden District in about 20 minutes. The beginning of lively Bourbon Street in the French Quarter is a 10-minute walk away, as are The National WWII Museum and the city's Warehouse and Arts Districts. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome can be reached on foot in just under 15 minutes. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is 30 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Warm rooms with Old World decor and modern amenities, plus suites with large living areas

Dominated by warm gold tones, the rooms at The Lafayette Hotel feel like a throwback to its original days, with rich patterned carpets and elegant wood furnishings. The Old World vibe is balanced by modern amenities like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers, which come standard. Free Wi-Fi is offered in all rooms. Closets are equipped with safes, irons, and ironing boards. Bathrooms feature sleek marble walk-in showers, as well as hairdryers and the hotel’s own branded toiletries. At the entry level are the Petite Rooms, which are snug spaces with king-size beds. Upgrading to Deluxe Rooms offers more living space and the option of two queen-size beds. The aptly named Balcony Rooms feature narrow balconies overlooking St. Charles Avenue -- not surprisingly, these rooms are particularly popular at Mardi Gras time. The hotel’s top-of-the-line options are its Suites, which include large living areas with plush couches and rich wood furnishings (but no balconies). They also add microwaves and mini-fridges. Some suites include stunning antique carved wood headboards. Corner suites feature large windows offering panoramic city views.

Features

A high-end steak house, a bar, and valet parking -- but no pool or fitness center

The Lafayette Hotel is more popular for its location than its amenities, which are limited. The main feature is Desi Vega’s Steak House, overlooking Lafayette Square. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant features an elegant, full-service bar in the main dining room, as well as a separate large bar area across the lobby in its own room. There’s no breakfast option offered at the hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Valet parking and airport transfers are available for a fee, and 24-hour concierge service is offered. Pets are welcome (additional fees apply). There’s no pool, fitness center, or spa.
