Prince Conti Hotel

The hotel is located in a beautiful Italianate building that has the air of old timey glamour. On the outside, this hotel gives the impression of quintessential New Orleans, with its white facade, wrought iron detailing, and grand flying flags. Inside, the lobby is welcoming with its large princely oil painting, wall of books, and crystal chandelier -- all of which add a dose of Southern chic. This isn't really a hotel to hang out in, though. There are no common spaces per se; the lobby is small, while the hallways are long and narrow, lacking any artwork or decor on the walls.

The Prince Conti Hotel is a relatively affordable option right in the heart of the action. Not even a block from the main drag (Bourbon Street is a few steps east), this hotel is a great base if partying up and down the French Quarter is on the agenda. Bumpy one-way streets, restaurants, shops, and old homes surround the property. This hotel is also a short walk to Jackson Square, which is about five blocks, so there's easy access to most of New Orleans' main downtown attractions.

Rooms are decorated in classic New Orleans style, with antique reproduction furniture -- like poster headboards and wooden desks -- and printed wallpaper. Many have some not-so-pleasant signs that the rooms are a bit old, such as stains on the carpeting and upholstery, and lime buildup on the bathroom fixtures. In-room tech isn't much better, as rooms come with tube TVs. There is, however, free Wi-Fi. More good news: The beds are super comfy, and there are heavy drapes on the windows if you want to sleep in. Late night revelers outside can be noisy sometimes, but the hotel is far enough from Bourbon Street that street noise isn't a huge issue. Guests should also be aware that some of the rooms don't have any windows.

There is no pool or fitness center on the property, but a nearby gym allows walk-ins for a daily fee. The front desk is open 24 hours a day, which is helpful since there is always a lot of activity at all hours; though there is no business center, there is a computer and printer in the lobby available for guest use. Just like at most downtown hotels, parking is pricey and valet only; this hotel is so superbly located downtown that you won't need a car if you are traveling as a tourist, however. The very cute Cafe Conti -- with its red booths and tables -- is attached to the hotel, and offers tasty fare and terrific breakfasts (the crepes are a favorite); it's open daily. It should be noted that the well-reviewed Bombay Club -- which is frequently mentioned as a highlight of this property -- has moved around the corner to a different hotel, and is now in the Chateau LeMoyne.
