The two-story Hotel Provincial -- with 94 rooms in the historic French Quarter -- is a retreat into old New Orleans. The hotel, with period architectural accents, brick courtyards, and antique furniture, also has on-site valet parking, free Wi-Fi, two pools, and an attractive restaurant with happy hour specials. Rooms complement the traditional vibe of the hotel, but the antique furniture can be dank and musty, although bathrooms have been remodeled. All in all, it's one of the best boutique hotels for the price in the neighborhood.

For guests looking for a historic New Orleans experience, the Hotel Provincial provides an oasis within the busy French Quarter. The small lobby, which has kept many of the features of the original property, has an antique front desk, checkered tiled floors, and an overhanging chandelier. Bought by the Dupepe family in 1961, the small hotel is a historical landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guests with a penchant for the paranormal also claim that the property is haunted and rooms on the street side of the hotel can sometimes hear ghost tour guides talking about the property.

On a narrow, bumpy New Orleans street near the Mississippi River
The Hotel Provincial's location in the middle of the French Quarter is convenient for tourists. Two blocks away is the famous Cafe Du Monde. Across the street is the Beauregard Keyes House built in 1826 by architect Francois Correjolles. On the same street as the hotel is the Old Ursuline Convent that housed the first nuns, who arrived in the city in 1727. Chartres Street sees a lot of foot, bike, car, and horse-drawn carriage traffic. In the immediate area is the French Market (a three-minute walk), Jackson Square (six minutes), and Decatur Street (two minutes). Bourbon Street is six minutes on foot from the hotel. The airport is a 25-minute drive.

Rooms at the Hotel Provincial differ from one another -- this is no cookie-cutter chain property -- but all evoke the hotel's historic feel with antique Southern furnishings, exposed brick fireplaces, and a lot of natural light. Along with the charming period pieces are modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, free HBO, and other cable channels, Sealy Plush mattresses, and iPod docking stations. Bathrooms are clean and modern with fixtures that are on par with luxury hotels. Views from balconies include the Mississippi River, the pools, or the hotel's private courtyards. On request, the hotel offers a rollaway bed for an additional charge. There are no minibars, but vending machines can be found on the hotel premises.

The space is open for nighttime cocktails and serves as the breakfast room in the mornings. The Latrobe Room -- which can fit up to 60 people -- is available for private functions, meetings, or weddings. The main courtyard of the hotel, lined in brick and decorated with a fountain in the center, can be used for small weddings of up to 20 people.
