Scene

Laid-back apartment-style property geared to long-term stays

The New Haven Village Suites is a low-key apartment-style property that caters to travelers on long-term stays. The gray, two-story, pitched-roof buildings are grouped around a central courtyard. As of late 2015, the courtyard is under renovation -- outdoor seating, landscaping, and walkways will be added -- and exteriors are being repainted, so guests should expect to see construction. Vaulted ceilings and a stone mantel fireplace create a bright setting for the breakfast service that can be a hectic scene. Coffee and tea are provided all day in the lobby, and free dinners are served three nights during the week. Full kitchens and grocery-delivery service are conveniences for guests who choose to cook. Many of the guests are visiting Yale University, which is three miles away. The hotel provides free shuttle service every 30 minutes, which some guests complain is not frequent enough.

Location

Off I-95, an eight- to 12-minute ride to Yale University

The New Haven Village Suites is in an industrial location off the I-95 and near New Haven's IKEA. New Haven Union Station, with trains to Boston and Washington, D.C., is a four-minute drive away. A free shuttle takes guests within a three-mile radius, which includes the University of New Haven, Yale University, the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and Grove Street Cemetery. It’s a 10-minute drive to the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport and Yale-New Haven Hospital Temple Medical Center. The beach at Hammonasset Beach State Park is a 30-minute drive, and it’s a 15-minute drive to the Lighthouse Point Park. Mystic Seaport is a 90-minute drive.

Rooms

Homey Studios, and One- and Two-Bedroom Suites with kitchens

Decor in these 112 apartment-style units is simple with green carpeting and traditional furniture. Studios and One- and Two-Bedroom suites have living rooms with red sofa beds, fireplaces in most, and kitchens that include dishwashers, refrigerators, stoves with ovens, microwaves, and cookware. Bathrooms are modest with shower/tub combos. Guests can rent rooms on a short- or long-term basis -- monthly leases are possible, and packages can include grocery delivery. Units of 800 square feet have either king or two double beds, and include private staircases. Two-Bedroom Suites measure 1,200 square feet and are on two levels. They have two bathrooms, and pitched ceilings that make them seem roomier. There aren’t any elevators, so guests with limited mobility might want to request rooms on the first floor. All units have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, hairdryers, air-conditioning, irons, and daily housekeeping.

Features

Meeting space, 24/7 market, gym, laundry facilities, plus free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and parking

For a property with apartment-style lodging, New Haven Village Suites offers a nice amount of features. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate and served in the casual dining room, which has a flat-screen TV for catching the morning news, and free "USA Today" newspapers are in the Clubhouse, which can be used for gatherings of up to 30 people. Snacks and microwaveable meals, as well as sundries, are available at the 24/7 market. There’s also a 24/7 business corner and a small gym with treadmills, an elliptical machine, a stair climber, and a recumbent bike. Self-service laundry is on-site as well. Wi-Fi, while spotty at times, is free throughout the property. On-site parking is also free.
