Bottom Line

Renovated in 2018, this mid-range hotel is an elegant contemporary choice in a convenient Petitcodiac riverside location in downtown Moncton. The 103 guest rooms are spacious and chic, with modern decor and amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, plus some have microwaves. Suites offer large living rooms and some have whirlpool tubs. Continental hot breakfast is included in rates, and there's a pleasant bar with an outdoor terrace that has nice river views. Other features include business facilities, a meeting room, and small shop, but the fitness room is small and doesn't offer many machines. For something with more features, the Delta Hotels by Marriott Beausejour has two restaurants and an indoor pool with a waterslide.

Scene

Mid-range chain hotel with elegant and contemporary interiors

Situated by the Petitcodiac River, the Chateau Moncton is a mid-range property that's part of the Choice hotel brand. It's housed in a large, vaguely chateau-like white five-story building with red trim and peaked red roof that's flanked by the parking lot. Note that the property's interiors have been heavily refurbished since our photo visit. Traditional decor has been updated to a more sleek and contemporary look, bathed in neutral hues and elegant touches like damask wallpaper accents. The lobby has chic soft gray seating and live plants that perk up the gray color scheme. Other common spaces, like the hotel's Galion bar that doubles as the breakfast room, has the same sort of elegant contemporary aesthetic. It's full of natural light thanks to large windows and French doors that open onto a wooden terrace that offers an alfresco dining spot along with views over the Petitcodiac River. Both business travelers and tourists stay here, though those wanting more features might want to look elsewhere, like at the nearby Delta Hotels by Marriott Beausejour.

Location

On the Petitcodiac River in downtown Moncton

The hotel sits on the banks of the Petitcodiac River on downtown Moncton's Main Street. There's a gas station and a Staples across the street, and the Champlain Mall is a four-minute drive (it can also be reached on foot in 10 minutes). There's a variety of dining options lining Main Street that are about an eight- to 15-minute walk down the road. Resurgo Place, home to the Moncton Museum, the Transportation Discovery Centre, and a visitor center, is an 11-minute walk from the hotel. Another area attraction is Magnetic Hill, as well as the Magnetic Hill Zoo and Magic Mountain SplashZone, about a 15-minute drive. The Moncton train station is a seven-minute drive away. Halifax Stanfield International Airport is just over a two-hour drive. Fredericton International Airport is an hour and 40 minutes away.

Rooms

Chic contemporary decor and good amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers

Note that rooms have been renovated since our last photo visit. The dated traditional decor has been replaced with chic contemporary stylings. Gray hues dominate, paired with crisp white bedding and sleek furnishings like work desks and large headboards. Rooms are spacious and all have armchairs, while suites have large living rooms with couches. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, plus some have microwaves. Bathrooms are sleek and modern, with white marble tiling and and large sink vanities that offer a good amount of storage space. They're equipped with shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, hairdryers, and individual toiletries. Some suites have separate showers and tubs, and some upgrade to whirlpool tubs. Views are usually of the parking lot and/or the river.

Features

Free hot breakfast, bar with outdoor terrace, small fitness room, small shop, and a business center

The hotel's Le Galion bar, which is also the dining area where breakfast is served, opens onto a lovely wooden deck with river views. This alfresco spot is furnished with tables and chairs and is a nice place for either morning coffee or an afternoon drink. The bar serves drinks, and there are flat-screen TVs usually screening sports. The free continental breakfast is a nice perk and includes hot items like eggs, bacon, and sausages as well as baked goods, breads, fruit, and cereal. The hotel doesn't offer any other dining besides breakfast.Business travelers are catered to with a business corner that's equipped with a computer and printer, plus free Wi-Fi throughout the property. There's one meeting room that can accommodate up to 90 people. The hotel does offer fitness facilities, but it's a small room with limited machines. Other features include a small shop that sells snacks, drinks, and sundries. Parking on the hotel's lot is free for guests.
