Bottom Line

The 197-room Hotel Perla Marina advertises itself as a four-star property, but it's really a three-pearl property in need of a facelift. Still, it has a nice swimming pool and great location on the beach in the coastal town of Nerja. Breakfast is usually included with the cost of the room (some rates include all three meals), but some guests have complained about the quality and variety of food offered. Cleanliness isn't an issue and some rooms have great views of the water from private terraces, but decor is dated and rooms lack charm. Hotel Puerta del Mar is often a bit cheaper and has a bit more character, but it lacks the Hotel Perla Marina's beachside location.

Scene

A quiet family-friendly hotel on the Mediterranean

The bright and airy lobby inside the Hotel Perla Marina has good bones with an open ceiling and staircase leading to the second floor. Clusters of comfortable furniture upholstered in orange and brown floral fabric look fresh, but the furnishings in the nearby play room look saggy and tired. The snack counter and bar take style cues from the ocean with blue mosaic tiles and a seascape mural.

Location

On the water in a tourist-friendly section of the coastal town of Nerja

The Hotel Perla Marina consists of two buildings accessible via an underground tunnel, with the second building directly on the water so beach access is easy to come by. The hotel is in the town of Nerja, though it's located on a quieter street without as many restaurants and shops as in the center, which is about a 15-minute walk from the front door. Nearby Mediterraneo Avenue is a four-minute walk.

Rooms

Clean and functional, but in need of an update; some have sea views

Rooms at Hotel Perla Marina could use a facelift. The light hardwood floors are a nice touch but heavy draperies, maroon bed coverlets, and dried floral arrangements look tired. Some of the sofas are clearly sagging and not all rooms have flat-screen TVs, but the bathrooms are modern with bathtubs and cleanliness isn't an issue. It may be worth the upgrade for a private terrace with ocean views and a flat-screen TV. In-room Wi-Fi is free.

Features

Buffet-style meals, swimming pool, and beach chairs on the sand

Some rates at this hotel include breakfast or even three meals a day, though some guests have complained the quality and variety of the food isn't the best. An outdoor, heated swimming pool has views of the ocean and there is a very small children's pool that needs to be cleaned. The beach and pool areas have sun loungers with umbrellas for guests to use. Inside, there's an ocean themed snack counter and bar for quick bites and cocktails, along with a very dated play room that wouldn't look out of place in a Florida dentist's office waiting room.
