The Chanric Inn is a seven-room bed-and-breakfast in a luxurious Victorian house. It's on a main boulevard on the outskirts of Calistoga, with impressive landscaping and a front porch that insulates it from most of the local traffic. Around back there's a pool and a garden patio, and the owners grow much of the produce used in their cuisine on the grounds. The rooms are small and lack TVs, but are impeccably decorated, and rates include a gourmet home-cooked breakfast. Guests looking for more privacy can find private cottages (and cheaper rates) at the Cottage Grove Inn on the north end of town, but the Chanric Inn's breakfast is tough to match.
Scene
Upscale Victorian bed-and-breakfast in a restored farmhouse
The Chanric Inn opened in 2013 after a full renovation of the 1875 Victorian farmhouse, and is run by a pair of French proprietors whose taste in decor is only surpassed by their taste in food and wine. Stone terraces with elevated box gardens lead up to a classic front porch. Inside the house, wooden floors stretch out in an open floor plan, with a bright living room featuring wine-colored sofas and a gas fireplace that flows into the modern kitchen and dining area.
Location
In a residential area, a little outside of downtown
The Chanric Inn is set back from a main road on a residential hillside just west of downtown Calistoga. It is convenient by car to the main street in Calistoga, but only walking distance to the southern half of downtown's restaurants and attractions. The town is surrounded by Napa Valley vineyards and the Palisade Mountains, and there are numerous wineries within a short driving distance. California’s Old Faithful Geyser and the Petrified Forest are within a few minutes' drive, while San Francisco is about a two-hour drive to the south.
Rooms
Small, individually decorated rooms with modern art
All seven individually decorated rooms have wood floors and modern art on bright-white walls. The rooms are on the small side and most have king beds with little room left over for seating areas. Rooms facing the pool are quieter than those that look out on the street, but noise isn't an issue for most guests. Room layouts differ, and some have low vaulted ceilings and low beds to compensate along with odd nooks and awkwardly placed doors that add a bit of character. Each room has its own bathroom with stone floors, stone bowl sinks, and marble walk-in showers. One room has a large bathroom with a separate whirlpool tub. There are no mini-fridges or coffeemakers, and some guests may be surprised to find that rooms also lack TVs.
Features
Outdoor pool and whirlpool hot tub, garden patio, massage room, and free gourmet breakfast
Relaxing common areas abound at The Chanric Inn, including a front porch, a garden patio, and a cozy living room with a fireplace. There's a Nespresso coffeemaker in the kitchen for guest use, and free wine and cheese is served every afternoon, with champagne and sweets in the evenings. The Chanric's free daily breakfast is a highlight, the three-course affair includes plenty of fresh fruit and savory dishes; examples include Boudin Blanc aux Pommes (French white sausage with Fuji apples, prunes, and calvados), smoked salmon rolls with eggplant caviar, and chocolate and chestnut terrines. There's also a heated outdoor pool and a whirlpool surrounded by a sundeck with lounge chairs. A massage room is outfitted for couples massages and the inn offers a familiar range of treatments, including hot stone massages. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
