Situated at the foot of Mt. St. Helena at the top of Napa Valley, the Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort is a charming mid-range retreat a block away from Calistoga’s main street. The location is a quiet and quaint one, with 60 rooms and suites that offer modern amenities and a range of features from kitchenettes to whirlpool tubs (though decor does vary and some rooms feel dated). The Baths at Roman Spa offer services using Calistoga mineral and geothermal water. There are two pools on-site -- one outdoors and one indoors. An outdoor picnic area has grills for guests to barbecue on and relax around. Just note that rooms at the Mount View Hotel & Spa are more stylish, often for only slightly higher prices.
Scene
A quaint resort with traditional decor
Located on a quiet residential block, the Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort is unassuming from its exterior to the simple rooms. The building has a Tuscan-style villa vibe with tiled copper-colored roofs and white paint. The lobby is decorated in an old-fashioned manner with tiled floors, oak wood furniture, a lovely fireplace, and a small front desk. There are plenty of trees and gardens on the property, giving guests a secluded feeling. The vibe is casual, comfortable, and low-key, but decidedly mid-range.

This scenic resort is surrounded by Napa Valley vineyards and the Palisade Mountains at the foot of Mt. St. Helena. California’s Old Faithful Geyser, the Petrified Forest, and state parks are all nearby. The charming town’s main street is one quiet block away from the resort and is home to quaint shops and unique restaurants. The immediate surrounding area is mainly residential with a small park across the street.
Rooms
Charming rooms with modern amenities
The 60 rooms are decorated in a villa-like style with charming flourishes. Plush white beds are surrounded by simple furniture and decorations. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, coffee machines, and mini-fridges. Suites feature full kitchens with a mid-size fridge, stovetop, oven, microwave, pots and pans, and a table and chairs. One more recently renovated building houses eight rooms in a Tuscan-style villa with cream plaster, authentic Italian windows, tile roofs, and arched entryways. Two of the rooms there include a whirlpool tub piped with pure natural mineral water directly from the source. Some patios look out over the beautiful grounds. Decor between room types vary widely; some feel more dated than others.
Features
Amenities include a full spa and pools with thermal water
The Baths at Roman Spa offer a range of authentic and customizable services using the celebrated Calistoga mineral waters. The mud bath rooms are an inviting space for guests. The resort’s pools -- there is an outdoor pool and an outdoor pool -- also use thermal water. Flower-filled patios, shady areas, fountains, and lounge chairs ideal for relaxing are all nice touches on the property. A barbecue and picnic area is ideal for an evening outdoors grilling your own food with friends and family. A farmer’s market occasionally takes place in the picnic area. A public computer and guest library with free books and newspapers are available in the lobby. There are no meeting rooms or gym.
