Cottage Grove Inn is a mid-range property tucked away on a leafy lot along Calistoga's main street, a few blocks from the center of town. Each of the 17 individual cottages has a quaint porch with rocking chairs and a studio-like interior with skylights and a wood-burning fireplace. Unlike many area hotels there are no mineral springs here -- or even a spa -- but in-room massages are available. Breakfast with waffles and evening wine are included in the rates. Across the street, the much larger Indian Springs Resort and Spa also has private cottages, as well as multiple pools fed by the area's hot springs.
Scene
An inn with quaint private cottages and country-style common areas, best suited to couples
The inn's cottages are interspersed between tall elm trees, and there's a central building that's part breakfast room and part country gift shop with a front desk. Off to one side of the lobby is a quaint country-style breakfast room with wicker chairs situated around round tables for two. Additional seating is found on an outdoor patio area with wrought-iron tables and lots of potted plants. The idyllic atmosphere is designed for couples looking for some quiet at the far end of the valley.
Location
On a leafy street in Calistoga, walking distance to the town center
The Cottage Grove Inn is on the outskirts of downtown Calistoga, at the northern end of the Napa Valley. It sits on a tree-lined plot between the main drag and a small avenue near a market and other hotels. The hotel is within easy walking distance of shops, golfing, restaurants, and spa attractions, and scores of wineries and parks are within easy driving distance. San Francisco is about a two-hour drive to the south.
Rooms
Rustic, yet plush private cottages with porches and whirlpool tubs
The inn's 17 cottages are insulated from most of the surrounding neighborhood, which is already fairly quiet. All cottages have small front porches with rocking chairs and stacks of cut logs for the fireplaces within. Vaulted ceilings with skylights make for bright interiors (sometimes too bright for late sleepers), and the hardwood floors made from salvaged boards from an old whiskey distillery add an authentic warmth to cheery pastel textiles and country furnishings. Sitting areas around the fireplaces have wide armchairs and ottomans. Amenities include stocked minibars, a flat-screen TV, wet bars, safes, Keurig coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have walk-in showers, bathrobes, magnifying mirrors, EO toiletries, and separate whirlpool hot tubs for two.
Features
Breakfast room with outdoor patio, free breakfast, and free evening wine
The Cottage Grove Inn's free breakfast is served in a bright room with a wood-burning fireplace with extra seating on an outdoor patio. Breakfast options include yogurt, fresh fruit, and pastries, along with waffles, smoothies, and even espresso drinks made to order. The inn also offers a free evening cheese and wine service. There's a business corner and free Wi-Fi throughout the property. While there's no spa here, in-room massages and other treatments can be arranged. Each cottage also has its own parking space.
