Bottom Line

Location is perhaps the biggest draw of this mid-range 160-room hotel, which was once a Days Inn and has undergone renovations during the past year. It is situated directly on the sand in Surfside Beach, a smaller enclave about eight-and-a-half miles south of Myrtle beach, which is rife with restaurants, bars, surf shacks, and small shops. The hotel does not have a great number of amenities apart from a small pool and hot tub, but guests have free access to the nearby Surfside Pier for fishing and dining. Renovated rooms generally get high marks from guests for cleanliness, and all rooms have free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Many rooms have balconies, though views are not directly onto the beach.

Scene

Close to the sand in the relaxed resort town of Surfside Beach

This property is situated far enough from the hustle of Myrtle Beach to offer a relaxed atmosphere, but is also within easy walking distance of many casual eateries and shops. The eight-story beige concrete building has green and orange accents, and is set amongst beachfront homes and small businesses -- a nice change from the high-rise scene in Myrtle Beach. The lobby is fairly plain, with wood floors and a few modern gray chairs accented with green polka-dot print pillows beside the windows. A table is set up with free coffee, and sun protection products are available for sale. Renovations have been ongoing for the past year or so, and parts of the hotel retain the acid colors of a few decades ago, while other areas have clearly been given a fresh paint job and an upgrade.

Location

On the sand about eight miles down the coast from Myrtle Beach

Surfside Beach Resort is situated a few hundred feet from the sand and about 35 minutes by public bus from the popular resort town of Myrtle Beach; the bus stop is about a mile from the beachfront hotel. All around the hotel is beach life: beach bars, surf shacks, barbecue joints, ice cream shops, and a wide stretch of sand punctuated by Surfside Pier. Surfside Beach is less built up than Myrtle Beach and lacks the high rises of the latter. Parking is free and plentiful at Surfside Beach Resort.

Rooms

Somewhat bland, with tropical patterns and natural wood accents

Leaf-patterned bedspreads add little to the otherwise plain rooms, which are carpeted and decorated in variations of sage green. The inclusion of natural wood cabinetry adds an unexpectedly appealing and rustic touch to otherwise standard chain hotel furnishings. Many rooms have a small kitchenette area, and all renovated rooms (completed in 2014) have a mini-fridge, flat-screen TV, microwave, and coffeemaker. Bathrooms include beige tile floors, hairdryers, and shower/tub combos.  Most rooms have some sort of ocean view, though not directly onto the beach; some look over the parking lot. Rooms with balconies are available. One-Bedroom King Suites have a private bedroom, and a living room with sleeper sofa and chair.

Features

Small pool with hot tub, pier access, and beachfront bar

The hotel’s main draw is its location and pier access, and it has few amenities otherwise. The family-friendly wood pier offers fishing pole rentals, an ice cream shop, a diner, and a beach bar with surfboard tables overlooking the water. The beach itself is pleasant and wide, and separated from the hotel by a short path winding through grass and palm trees. Next door is the hotel's oceanfront bar, Scotty's Beach Bar, which has a shaded outdoor patio for cocktails and live entertainment. A small pool and hot tub are located in the corner of the hotel's parking lot. In the lobby, there's a tiny business center consisting of a computer and a printer.
