The Ocean Park Resort is a solid pick for families who want the budget-friendly price point, an oceanfront location, and the ability to bring along the family dog (20 pounds or less). Other perks include a pool that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, a uniquely shaped hot tub that can fit a large group, and an indoor heated pool for the colder winter months. However, the property is hardly the “resort" that the name implies.The Ocean Park Resort is similar to other properties in the budget-friendly category, in that many of the rooms have full-size kitchens. Its common spaces have a no-frills feel -- particularly the lobby, whose cream-colored tiling, light blue accent wall, and halogen ceiling lights look a bit outdated. Adjacent to the check-in counter is a carpeted area that has a somewhat more homey -- albeit generic -- vibe, with two sofas, a computer, and a couple of shelves stacked with books.

The Ocean Park Resort stands on a giant stretch of sandy beach, which is the best feature of this property. The hotel is conveniently located around a five-minute drive (depending on traffic) from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. There is a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop across from the property, as well as multiple hotels and restaurants nearby. It's a 20-minute walk to Family Kingdom Amusement Park, and about 10 minutes farther by foot to the restaurants at 2nd Avenue Pier. Many may find it a bit of a trek on foot, and it's just five minutes by car. Some other budget-friendly hotels are located closer to the action.

Standard rooms offer solid amenities, which include mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. Upgrading to a suite will get you more space, a washer/dryer, and a full kitchen that includes a refrigerator and stove. All rooms, however, are sparsely decorated and a little outdated. Blue carpets, typical beach-style decor, and cream-colored walls adorned by few framed pictures make for a generic, somewhat tired feel. Still, the decor (particularly the bedding) is nicer than at some competing value hotels in Central Myrtle Beach, such as Grande Shores Ocean Resorts Condominiums. Some rooms have sitting areas, which feature love seats and small circular tables with chairs. The bathrooms are fairly plain, with wall-mounted hairdryers and tub/shower combos. Every room has a private balcony, though many are quite tiny and not all offer ocean views.

Although it’s a budget hotel, the Ocean Park Resort has more amenities than similar properties in the same price range. There is an outdoor pool that overlooks the ocean, a large hot tub that’s shaped like a doughnut, a heated indoor pool, and a small gym with a few treadmills. The best feature of the hotel is its close proximity to the beach and the beautiful ocean views from some rooms. Pet owners take note -- dogs under 20 pounds are allowed and on-site grooming services are available for a fee.
