Bottom Line

This four-and-a-half-pearl property is perched on a hilltop overlooking Elia Beach. It's ideal for couples looking for a relaxed hotel that's a short drive away from Mykonos Town. All 80 rooms are spacious and contemporary, with sea-view balconies or patios -- some feature hot tubs and private pools. The hotel has two infinity pools plus a chic poolside bar with a DJ. There is a full-service thalassotherapy spa, small fitness center, and an elegant restaurant serving gourmet cuisine. A free breakfast buffet is served daily, and a free shuttle bus to the beach and town is a welcome addition for most previous guests. Travelers preferring to be in Mykonos Town should consider the similarly-priced Semeli Hotel, which has a sharp modern style, but is farther from a beach.

Scene

Chilled-out luxury hotel with lovely sea views

Built in 2014, the Myconian Avaton Resort combines traditional Greek whitewashed exteriors with modern decor and contemporary furnishings. The bright, atrium-style lobby has stone floors, colorful skin rugs, raw wood tables, large white couches, and woven seating pods hanging from the ceiling. The reception area features a large marble table as opposed to a desk, creating a laid-back, personal vibe from the moment guests check in. During the day, guests tend to congregate around the hotel's two large infinity pools, lounging on red padded chairs and taking in the stunning sea views. The ambience is relaxed, with a DJ playing chilled-out music throughout the day. In the evening, the pool area glitters with tiny spot lights, illuminating the view and creating a lovely focal point. The hotel mostly attracts couples looking for a relaxing sunny break, though some families also pass through on occasion. It's also worth noting that rates here can be far lower than at luxury resorts closer to Mykonos Town, making this a solid value for the category.

Location

Located on a hilltop just a minute or two away from Elia Beach on foot

The Myconian Avaton Resort is situated on a rocky hillside, just a minute or two on foot from the golden sands and crystal waters of Elia Beach. Though there isn't much activity in the immediate area, the hotel operates a free shuttle service to Elia Beach (the hill can be challenging for some), where there are plenty of beachside bars and restaurants. The shuttle goes to Mykonos Town as well (a 25-minute drive), making it convenient to get around and explore city center hotspots like Little Venice, Paraportiani Church, and the Windmills of Mykonos. Many travelers rent cars or bikes to visit the island's beaches, and the popular Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach are around a 30-minute drive from the hotel. The airport and port are around 25 minutes away by car, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Chic, contemporary rooms with balconies or patios -- some with sea views and private pools

This property offers 80 contemporary rooms and villas with chic furnishings. White painted walls and pristine white bedding add a fresh, airy feel, while statement marble headboards, oversized bedside pendant lights, and raw wood furniture create a finish that's equally rustic and on-trend. Jewel tones like sapphire and ruby, as well as vibrant blown-up landscape photographs, give higher-category rooms a nice bit of additional character. Each room has a furnished balcony or patio, while some add a hot tub, private pool, kitchenette, and separate living area. We recommend opting for one with a sea view to maximize the luxury experience. Modern amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, iPod docking stations, free Wi-Fi, minibars, safes, and phones. Bathrooms are chic and modern, with dark tiled floors and walls, raw wood vessel sinks, round mirrors, soaking bath tubs, sleek walk-in showers, toilets, and a generous selection of free luxury toiletries. Hairdryers, as well as free soft bathrobes and slippers, are provided.

Features

Two infinity pools, free breakfast, gourmet restaurant, plus freebies like shuttle bus and Wi-Fi

Despite its small stature, the hotel offers all of the essentials for a luxury escape. The two outdoor infinity pools have gorgeous sea views and a chic poolside bar with a DJ. A generous free breakfast buffet features Greek yogurt, eggs, bacon, coffee, and even Champagne, and is served daily on the outdoor terrace. There's also a chic on-site restaurant serving gourmet Mediterranean cuisine for lunch and dinner. Keep in mind that meals can be pricey, though that's relatively standard on this island. The hotel has a full-service thalassotherapy spa, with a steam bath and exotic treatment menu including massages and facials, as well as a small fitness center with up-to-date cardio machines and free weights. A private section on Elia Beach has sun loungers and umbrellas for guests, and there's a quiet indoor library on-site (for those who prefer to unwind closer to home). Other services include a 24-hour front desk, concierge, room service, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. There's free tea and coffee in common areas throughout the day. A free daily shuttle bus runs to Elia Beach, Mykonos Town, the airport, and the port.
