Scene

Small budget hotel with spectacular ocean views and classically simple style

Renovated in 2010, the Hotel Gorgona offers no-frills, traditional lodging and a relaxed, away-from-it-all atmosphere. It has Cycladic whitewashed exteriors, with stone gray painted doors and ceramic potted plants peppered around the building. The lobby is tiny, yet nicely decorated, with a small front desk, glossy marble floors, and seashell adorned mirrors. The bright, breezy dining room is a lovely place to have breakfast, decorated with white walls, white dining tables, and mermaid sculpted pillars. Due to it's close proximity to Mykonos Town, it attracts mostly couples and small groups looking for a quieter base to explore the island. As there is no on-site restaurant or much activity in the immediate area, the hotel has a calm vibe during the day and night. The pool area can be a popular place to gather in the evening though, as it offers wonderful panoramic sunset views, and a chilled-out poolside bar.

Location

Set on a quiet road, a 10-minute walk to lively Mykonos Town

Hotel Gorgona is located in the peaceful area of Tagoo, on a small, quiet mountainside road. Although there's little activity in the immediate vicinity, the shops, bars, restaurants of Mykonos Town are around a 10-minute walk from the hotel, making it an ideal spot for travelers who want to be close to the island's nightlife, but not right on top of it. Popular attractions within the town include the Mykonos Windmills, Paraportiani Church, Little Venice, and the Aegean Maritime Museum. There are some lovely beaches nearby too, such as Agios Stefanos, which is a short bus ride from the hotel. Many travelers visiting Mykonos rent quad bikes or cars to get around, making it easier to explore the island. The airport is a five-minute drive from the hotel, while the old port is around a 10-minute drive.

Rooms

Small, simple rooms with balconies and basic amenities

The hotel's simple, traditional decor flows through to all of its 19 rooms. White walls and marble-tiled floors create a bright, airy feel, while striped blue curtains and blue comforters add a nautical, homey element. Though small, each room has a balcony and seating area, ready-made for taking in the gorgeous views of the sea and old port. Furniture is kept minimal, with double or twin beds, built-in wardrobes, dressers, and chairs. All the basic amenities are included, such as air-conditioning, phones, safes, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. However, there are no coffee- or tea-making facilities, which may be disappointing for some. Bathrooms are small, but have all the essentials, such as showers, white sinks, toilets, large mirrors, and free soap and shower gel.

Features

Outdoor pool with sunset views, poolside bar, plus freebies like breakfast and Wi-Fi

The panoramic ocean views are the main selling point of this hotel. These are best appreciated from the large outdoor pool, which has an adjoining hot tub, reclining sun loungers, and straw umbrellas. There's also a small outdoor seating area and bar next to the pool, serving a variety of drinks and snacks throughout the day. Although there's no full restaurant at the hotel, a free breakfast buffet is served in the dining area, offering a basic selection of juices, coffee, cereals, breads, and cheeses. Unfortunately, it doesn't get the best marks from previous guests. Other services include laundry, babysitting, lending library, plus free Wi-Fi and on-site parking. The hotel also offers an airport transfer service, as well as a daily beach shuttle, though there is an additional fee for both.
