Novotel Munich City is an upper-middle-range hotel that’s located outside of Munich's city center, but easily accessible to most major attractions by foot or on public transportation. This particular Novotel branded property doesn't hold any surprises: there’s a lovely spa with an indoor pool and a gym, a restaurant on-site, meeting spaces, and an efficient design throughout. The 307 rooms include minibars and kettles and were renovated in 2017. The biggest drawbacks are an expensive breakfast and an atmosphere that feels a little cold. For those who like a chain brand name, the nearby Holiday Inn Munich – City Centre is a good alternative with extra business facilities.
Scene
Modern hotel with a sleek design, plenty of public spaces, and family-friendly policies
Novotel Munich City has the features of an upscale hotel, and an atmosphere that's fairly laid-back and relaxed. The interiors are modern and sleek and are complemented by lovely outdoor patios with charming hedge designs and tables and chairs shaded by tan umbrellas. With the brand’s family-friendly features -- two kids under 16 stay and eat breakfast free -- it attracts mostly families. However, it’s extensive meeting facilities and fairly central location brings in a fair share of business travelers too. Guests have commented that staff can be cold at reception and in the restaurant.
Location
Outside of Munich's center, but within walking distance of public transportation and restaurants
Novotel Munich City has a decent location in the city; it’s about a 20-minute walk to the city center and major attractions like Marienplatz. Those who are young or in good shape can reach Munich Residenz or the English Garden in 27 minutes on foot. Near the hotel is the Gasteig riverside concert hall and the Deutsches Museum, which are about five minutes away on foot. There are loads of restaurants on surrounding streets and an S-bahn and tram stop is four minutes from the property. It’s a 35-minute drive to Munich's airport.
Rooms
Contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and minibars
Rooms, renovated in 2017, are chic with darker colors and bold prints. Rooms are fairly spacious for Europe, though the updated rooms don’t seem to maximize the space for business travelers by leaving out desks and instead adding small love seats. All rooms are air-conditioned and include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, kettles, minibars, and safes. Free minibars are available in all rooms except Standard Rooms. Executive Rooms and Suites offer Nespresso machines. Bathrooms are modern, and some have private water closets. They’re all equipped with separate showers and tubs, free toiletries, and hairdryers.
Features
Spa with a gym, indoor pool, and hammam
Features at Novotel Munich City are convenient and well thought out for both leisure and business travelers. The highlight is the relaxing spa with an indoor pool and deck set with modern yellow loungers. Garden views make it a pleasant space to relax. The gym includes Lifefitness cardio and weight equipment. It also has a sauna and a hammam. The hotel’s Gourmet Bar offers international cuisine that centers around the theme of bread for lunch and dinner. During the warmer months, meals are served on the outdoor terrace. Room service is available, but with limited hours. Every morning, a breakfast buffet is offered for a hefty fee. Two kids under the age of 16 eat breakfast for free if their parents order breakfast. As far as business amenities go, there are nine fully-equipped meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi throughout, and a public Mac desktop. For those who need a break from work, there are a couple of video game consoles that add a fun element to the property. The hotel offers a paid parking garage with compact spaces.
