Bottom Line

The 51-room Hotel Bavaria is a family-run upper-middle-range property in the outskirts of Munich's downtown area. The four-story structure features pleasant and inviting interiors with contemporary decor, lots of wood furnishings, and details like design-oriented lighting fixtures. Three types of sunlit and cozy rooms are available, some with balconies, and all equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, iHome docks, and free Wi-Fi, as well as an apartment with a full kitchen suitable for larger groups and families. Breakfast is included in the room rate and served in the breakfast room, which has a lovely outdoor patio with seating. The hotel is well serviced by public transportation and is a 10-minute ride into the downtown area, but travelers looking for something more central might want to consider the comparable Hotel Stachus or the TRYP Muenchen City Center.

Scene

Small, contemporary hotel with calm atmosphere and pleasant interiors with Art-Deco touches

The lobby of the four-story Hotel Bavaria is a pleasant black-and-white affair with subtle Art-Deco touches, with a black front desk, square-shaped seats, large black-and-white photo adorning the wall, and other decorative details like birch tree branches. Run by a family and small staff, the quiet hotel appeals to business travelers as well as tourists who don't mind a slight remove from the city center.

Location

Located on a quiet street in a slightly sleepy area just outside of downtown

The hotel sits on a quiet street lined with other stucco apartment buildings as well as 19th-century stone structures; there is little in the way of nightlife in the immediate environs, though several good restaurants are within walking distance. There is a U-Bahn station about a five-minute walk from the property, which gives access to downtown Munich in an additional five minutes. The more major station of München Donnersbergerbrücke is a 15-minute walk, and gives access to the airport in about 50 minutes. The Oktoberfest grounds are a 15-minute walk east of the hotel.

Rooms

Cozy, pleasant rooms with light wood furnishings and some with balconies, plus newer room with open plan bathrooms

There are three types of rooms available at Hotel Bavaria: Comfort, Exclusive, and Lifestyle Rooms. Rooms are cozy and inviting with simple decor that includes light wood furnishings and neutral tones enlivened by deep red carpeting and vibrant art on the walls. Rooms are full of natural light courtesy of large windows, and many also have private balconies. Bathrooms are standard with either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos and heated towel racks. The newer Lifestyle Rooms are distinctly more contemporary in decor, with blonde wood furniture, patterned slate gray wallpaper accent walls, and an open plan bathroom configuration that might pose privacy issues for some, with shower/tub combos partially partitioned from the sleeping quarters by a half-wall (though a separate toilet room). All rooms have flat-screen TVs, fully stocked minibars with snacks and alcohol, iHome alarm clocks, digital safes, free Wi-Fi, and thoughtful touches like umbrellas. Rooms aren't air-conditioned.

The hotel also has an apartment available (though not in the same building) that suits larger groups and families with two bedrooms, a living room, and fully-equipped kitchen.

Features

Cozy bar, airy breakfast room with outside breakfast patio, and computer terminal in lobby

A small bar just off the lobby provides a cozy atmosphere with lots of seating including couches and comfortable chairs in slate gray and black hues. Breakfast is free and served in a sunlit room where a buffet-style spread is arranged on a tidy countertop flanked by cream-colored walls. The breakfast area opens up onto a lovely wooden patio for summer mornings. There is a computer terminal in the lobby for guests' use and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
