Bottom Line

The Bayerischer Hof Hotel was first opened in 1841 to accommodate King Ludwig I's esteemed guests. Today, it's still one of the city's top luxury hotels, and attracts royalty, politicians, and celebrities (former guests include Michael Jackson and Martin Scorcese.) Rooms are sophisticated and spacious by local standards, with a variety of decor schemes. Extensive features include some of the city's trendiest eateries and bars (a Michelin-star restaurant among them), an infinity-edge rooftop pool with great views, and a spa. The location right on Promenade Platz is within walking distance of most of the city's popular sights. If the Bayerischer Hof is fully booked, the
nearby Charles Hotel is another luxury option worth considering.

Scene

Traditional grand hotel in historic building

The Bayerischer Hof Hotel has been owned and operated by the Volkhardt family since it first opened in 1841, though much of the building was damaged in World War II. (The stylish Falk Bar, named for Falk Volkhard, is the only room that wasn't harmed, and is located in the former Hall of Mirrors). Guests enter the hotel through revolving doors staffed by doormen. Inside, the two-story lobby is certainly grand, with a second-floor balustrade, marble floors, and chandeliers -- but the dark marble and brassy accents feel vaguely '90s, as do the corporate, patterned carpets in some of the meeting spaces. The hotel attracts a mix of well-heeled tourists looking for something special, business travelers, and the occasional celebrity.

Location

Smack-dab in the center of Munich

The hotel is located right on Promenade Platz and is a five-minute walk from popular sights such as the Bavarian State Opera
and the Hofbrauhaus Beer Hall. Residenz, the former residence of the Bavarian monarchs, is a
10-minute walk away, as is the adjacent Hofgarten. The hotel is also a five-minute walk from Munich’s shopping district in Theatinerstrasse,
and from Funf Hofe (Five Courts), an upscale mall with shops such as Max
Mara, Massimo Dutti, Patrizia Pepe, and Emporio Armani.

Rooms

Large, comfortable rooms and suites with varying decor and big marble bathrooms

Rooms are sophisticated and spacious by local standards. Decor schemes vary, though most share some common elements, such as plush wall-to-wall carpeting, crown molding, and floor-to-ceiling drapes. The Cosmopolitan R&B-Style Rooms have bold black and red color schemes; Graf Pilati rooms are decked out in soothing grays; and Laura Ashley Style Rooms are adorned in busy floral prints. The 60 suites also vary, but some have private terraces and
excellent city views. Some rooms have two twin beds pushed together rather than a single large bed, and many will feel that the style of the rooms falls short of five-star standards. All rooms have marble bathrooms with rainfall showers, separate soaking tubs, heated towel racks, and fluffy bathrobes, free toiletries, and hairdryers. The long corridors
can feel endless at times; guests with mobility issues should request a room by the elevators. Rooms overlooking Promenadeplatz have the prettiest views, though those that face out on the interior courtyard are the quietest.

Features

Rooftop pool, numerous concept bars and restaurants, spa, and fitness center

The Bayerischer Hof has some of the trendiest social hubs in the city, with six bars and five restaurants, each with its own individual concept, menu, and decor. Options range from the Polynesian-style
Trader Vic’s restaurant with tiki statues, bamboo-leaf dishes, and bamboo
chairs to the classy Michelin-star Atelier. A free and ample buffet breakfast is served daily and features a mix of hot breakfast dishes, pastries, cold cuts, and cereals. The Blue Spa offers a spacious sauna area, a gym
with scenic city views, and a beauty salon. There's also a rooftop pool with panoramic city views. Meeting spaces include the Cinema Lounge, a good choice
for company presentations or private celebrations. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but it's slow, and guests wanting high-speed Internet have to pay a surcharge.
