Though there are cheaper options in the town of Morro Bay, the independently owned Beach Bungalow Inn and Suites offers clean, modern decor and a family-like environment. Guests can chat around the communal fire pit, walk two blocks to the Embarcadero shops and restaurants, or take bike rides to the beaches on a rented cruiser. Every night booked comes with a free meal voucher for one of three restaurants in town. Though the rooms aren't as soundproof as some might like, this is a charming choice for those looking for a little more than just a budget hotel. It's one of the most popular options in Morro Bay, but unlike the pricier Anderson Inn, it's not right on the water.
Scene
1950s motel redone with a modern beachy twist
The tiny one story, 14-room Beach Bungalow Inn and Suites has a laidback beachy vibe to it. The yellow-and-turquoise exterior is surrounded by palm trees, ferns, and bamboo to give it a tropical feel. In the center of the parking lot, there is a small courtyard with a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs that is lit every night for guests to gather around. Because the inn is more of a motel layout, there isn't a lobby, but there is a one-room office for checking in decorated with seascape paintings and bowls of seashells, including a large abalone shell filled with free candy.
Location
Within walking distance of the Embarcadero, but not of the beaches
The hotel is located in a quiet neighborhood only two blocks from the Embarcadero, with a busy harbor and clear views of Morro Rock (though the three looming smokestacks of the nearby power plant can be intimidating at first glance). The Embarcadero is where two of the three restaurants where guests can use their meal vouchers are found. To get to the closest beach, however, takes 14 minutes by foot down a busy road, but only five minutes on the two beach cruisers available for rent at the hotel. (Families with small children might be better off taking a car instead.)
Rooms
Rooms offer most of the essentials with none of the frills
The room decor is modern and minimalist, with hardwood floors, plantation shutters, dark wood furniture, and a beachy color palette of blue, brown, and white. Every room comes with a fridge, a coffeemaker, and free bottled water. There are flat-screened TVs and ample closet space for hanging clothes. Many of the rooms have gas fireplaces, an important feature when the temperature dips down in the colder months. Guests in other rooms can sometimes be heard through the walls, however. The bathrooms are clean and not too tiny, though some could use bigger showers and more counter space.
Features
Free restaurant meals for every night stayed
One of the features that sets this budget hotel apart from others is that guests get a meal voucher for every night they stay. These vouchers can be used for a free breakfast at three different restaurants in town, a fish-and-chips lunch, or a wine flight tasting for two. Also, the hotel often offers special discount packages, such as 50 percent off the third night for guests who stay for three consecutive nights (though no meal vouchers for that night). The hotel is pet-friendly for a fee and offers free biscuits and a blanket for canine friends. Parking is free.
