Rooms are worn, and some guests complain of ants
Surrounding area is unattractive and noisy
Set just outside the north edge of the historic Medina's wall, the Ryad Mogador Hotel is a tidy, basic budget option in Marrakech. Rooms are large and clean, though there isn't any Wi-Fi in them and past guests have complained about poor maintenance. With an outdoor pool and three eateries, the 162-room property has slightly more facilities than the average budget hotel. Rates are affordable for close proximity to the tourist sights.
Scene
Moroccan-inspired, but somewhat bland, common areas that don't encourage lounging
Prefaced by an ugly cement exterior, the bright, high-ceilinged lobby of the Ryad Mogador Hotel makes an attempt at grandeur with a traditional inlaid table, colorful cushions, and murals. The Salon de Thé -- with traditional carpets, red brocade armchairs, and large windows -- hits the mark somewhat better, although the unadorned restaurant is bland at best. The outdoor pool deck, despite its chairs, hardly feels like a place to lounge. Most guests aren't here to relax, though; they're budget-conscious tourists looking for an affordable, clean hotel as a home base.
Location
Just outside the northern Medina wall
The Ryad Mogador Hotel is located just a few steps from the northern Medina wall, putting the central Jemaa El-Fna square within a 20-minute walk. The renowned Jardin Majorelle is just around the corner in the other direction, about a 10-minute walk. The area immediately around the hotel is bland and uninteresting, along a major traffic thoroughfare, but there is a little shop next door where guests can pick up affordable breakfast alternatives. The airport is about a 15-minute drive away, or there's a cheap bus that stops just across the square from the hotel that comes directly from the airport.
Rooms
Bland, tired, and functional
Rooms in the high-rise Ryad Mogador Hotel are much like the rest of the hotel: bland, tired, and functional. Tile floors and dated wood furniture make them feel somewhat institutional, but the walls and curtains betray the tiredness of the building. Fresh flowers and pops of color in the bedding indicate care. Bathrooms are small and old, with shower/tub combos. Each room has a flat-screen TV and air-conditioning. Some rooms have two single beds pushed together; be sure to ask for a true double bed. Rooms are generally quite clean, but some guests complain of seeing ants. Other guests complain about the quality of the mattresses.
Features
Three eateries and an outdoor pool
The Ryad Mogador Hotel has few features, but more than most hotels in its price range. It has three eateries: the Moroccan-continental restaurant, the tea salon, and a pool snack bar serving Italian fare. The outdoor pool with loungers is a decent park. There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby, but no signal in the rooms. A meeting room, babysitting, and self-serve laundry round out the features. There's free parking in the lot in front of the hotel.
