Bottom Line

The five-room Riad Dar Massai is a traditional Moroccan hotel located in the southern end of the city's Medina, a 15-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna and the souks. Decor is muted throughout, from the courtyard to the rooms, which are arranged around a central courtyard and feature air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. The rooftop terrace is a highlight, with shaded loungers and Medina views. There’s a small plunge pool in the central courtyard, with seating areas for guests to relax. A Moroccan breakfast is served each morning on the terrace (included in the rates), and the restaurant offers traditional fare for evening meals. Prices are fair for the Medina, but guests looking for a spa and hammam may try nearby Le Borjs de la Kasbah, where rates are higher.

Riad Dar Massai

Scene

Intimate riad with traditional, simple style and a romantic vibe

Riad Dar Massai's location, at the southern end of the historic Medina area, ensures that the immediate setting is more tranquil and relaxed than what's found closer to the souks. This small five-room riad sets a romantic tone from the moment guests step inside and are welcomed with warm tea and biscuits. The light and airy communal spaces and open-air courtyard, with their distinctive Moroccan touches and muted decor, only enhance the effect. Interiors are full of natural earth tones, and the accessories and artistic touches are coordinated throughout. There are numerous secluded spots around the courtyard and patios to relax with drinks or mingle with other guests. Given the intimate nature and size of the hotel, couples are the most frequent visitors here, but a few families and small groups of friends often pass through as well.

Location

South Medina location, just a three-minute walk from El Bahia Palace

The riad's location toward the southern end of the Medina (near the Mellah, in fact) means that the hotel is slightly farther away from some of the city’s main attractions. It’s around a 15-minute walk to the main square, Jemaa el-Fna, where the city's infamous souks sprawl in all directions. A little closer at hand is the El Bahia Palace, which will take 10 minutes to reach on foot, while El Badi Palace, which is a five-minute walk from the property. Moulay El Yazid Mosque and the Saadiens Tombs are both a two-minute walk. There are all manner of cafes, restaurants, galleries, and other sights throughout the Medina. Arset el Bilk, the city's main bus terminal, can be reached by car in six minutes. Menara Airport is a 10-minute cab ride from the hotel, though this depends on traffic. Transfers can be arranged by contacting the hotel (for a fee).

Rooms

Simple, but attractive, with distinctive Morroccan touches plus air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel has five rooms, all of which are fairly similar in size, though higher categories have extra seating space. Each is individually decorated with mostly traditional decor-- save touches of patterns or vibrant colors. Artwork and accessories carefully match the overall look, though the style is simpler than some of the more upscale riads in the area. Mosaic tile floors have bright rugs for comfort and there are many distinctive Moroccan touches in the carved plaster and ornate ironwork on windows. Rooms lack TVs, which is common in this part of town, but they do come with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are arranged around an inner courtyard and stay quiet. Bathrooms are done in a mix of traditional tadelakt plaster and mosaic tiling, with walk-in showers and large vessel sinks. Counter and shelf space is ample, and there are lots of nooks for toiletries and other accessories. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided.

Features

Rooftop terrace, courtyard with pool, Moroccan dining, and free breakfast

This boutique property has a few great features, and guests are treated to a traditional Moroccan breakfast each morning, including crepes, omelets, pancakes, tea, coffee, and fresh juices. It's served on the rooftop terrace in warmer weather. The hotel has a restaurant, serving local tagines and international fare -- bear in mind that reservations are required for lunches and evening meals. Seats and loungers are arranged on a pretty rooftop terrace -- which is a highlight -- and this offers space to chill out in a more secluded setting. There is no spa or hammam on-site, but the charming central courtyard has a small plunge pool for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
