Bottom Line

The 71-room Red Hotel Marrakech is a budget-friendly, modern, mid-range accommodation in Gueliz, which is in the new town. It's on a major avenue right across from the train station, which makes for convenience but also heavy traffic -- fortunately, the traffic roar is barely audible in the pool, or the rooms, as long as the balcony doors are closed. The rooms include up-to-date mosaic-tiled bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and private balconies but lack mini-fridges and coffeemakers. The restaurants and pool are shared with the adjoining Opera Plaza Hotel next door (where the advertised bowling alley, fitness center, and spa are), so some areas can get a bit crowded. The Opera Plaza has nicer rooms, but the Red Hotel has lower rates.

Red Hotel Marrakech

Scene

Bland, blocky budget hotel

The Red Hotel Marrakech's exterior and street-side terrace fit right into the ville nouvelle, or new city, but its interior decor could be anywhere in the world. The Red City of Marrakech has had little influence on the hotel's design, other than the common theme of bright-red accents on everything from lamp shades to signs, which, along with a draping chandelier, add pizzazz to an otherwise undistinguished lobby. Most guests are budget-conscious singles and couples, though kids are common here too.

Location

In Gueliz, in the new town, across from the train station

The hotel is located in Gueliz, in new town, right across the street from the train station. It's an eight- to 10-minute taxi ride to the 11th-century medina, a UNESCO world heritage site where vendors sell traditional crafts, or a 30-minute walk. The Theatre Royal and Palais des Congres are within a 15-minute walk. The beautiful Majorelle Garden, also in Gueliz, is within a five-minute drive or a half-hour walk.  Marrakech Menara International Airport is a 12- to 15-minute drive in the opposite direction.

Rooms

Painted red with small private balconies

If not for their dramatic color schemes and private balconies, the 71 rooms would look like countless others in the middle-range category, but they all have red-and-white painted walls and beds covered in bright red covers. The beds have large black-painted headboards with attached nightstands and reading lamps. Doors and other wood furnishings are also painted black, with upholstered red chairs, red rugs, and red pillows. Minibars or mini-fridges and coffeemakers are missing. Each room has a small private balcony with a small table for two, but they suffer from traffic noise and views of nothing but the busy avenue and other modern, blocky buildings. The bathrooms are covered in sand-colored mosaic tile, with bidets and walk-in showers.

Features

Outdoor pool, restaurant and bar, access to neighboring hotel's spa, fitness center, and restaurants

The best features at the Red Hotel Marrakech are not at the hotel at all but next door at a sister property, the Opera Plaza Hotel. Better restaurants, a spa, fitness center, nightclub, and a six-lane bowling alley can be found there. The on-site restaurant and bar have outdoor seating on a street-side terrace, which is fine for guests who don't mind the passing traffic. There's a hookah set up for smokers. A simple breakfast of boiled eggs, pastries, and fruit is available (for a fee). One flexible meeting room comes with audiovisual services and is connected to an outdoor terrace. The outdoor pool, although shared by both hotels, has a nice sun deck with plenty of chairs and an Arabian tent-style lounge area. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
