Well outside of the city in the Palmeraie district, Murano Resort Marrakech is an alluring mix of traditional Moroccan architecture and modern opulence, with an occasional party scene centered around its red-tiled outdoor pool. This upscale property has four pools in total, and the 24 guest rooms all have marble bathrooms and private balconies or terraces; Deluxe Rooms are enormous, with fireplaces and bathrooms as big as European hotel rooms. Most guests appreciate the resort's French pedigree and style, but the service doesn't quite match, and the restaurants' limited menus leave something to be desired -- especially since the property is so far from the Medina.
Scene
Edgy combination of pop art and traditional architecture, with riads and pools in the palm gardens
A palatial outpost of the French hotelier Murono Hotels and Resorts, Murano Resort Marrakech is a collection of separate riad-style buildings nestled in several acres of private grounds. As with nearby Palmeraie district properties, lounging outside in the beautiful gardens is the main draw, and the verdant lawns here are dotted with palm trees and set with gently curving white furniture and bright red cushions. Inside, the style turns edgy, with oversized pop art paintings, massive chandeliers, white leather furnishings, and black and red rugs playing off of traditional Moroccan architecture and sandy colored stone walls. The pools are simple and chic, including one with red tiling, and surrounded by sunbathing guests -- who must pay extra to use the loungers and towels. The poolside bar, in keeping with the property's hip leanings, is reached by descending sleek white stairs with red carpeting, shaded by a wood-slated roof. The pools here sometimes lure partiers, particularly when the DJs come around on weekends.
Location
Outside the city in the palm groves, with access to golf courses
Murano Resort Marrakech is in the posh Palmeraie district with several other luxury hotels nearby, far from the commotion of the historic city center. The hotel operates a free shuttle to the Medina for guests, and it's about a 15-minute drive from here (for guests with cars, free parking is provided). Around central Marrakech, guests can explore the Bab Debbagh tannery and Jamaa el Fna marketplace, both just under 15 minutes' drive. Golf Club Amelkis is a 20-minute drive, while Golf Club Palmeraie is just under 10 minutes. Marrakech Menara Airport is about 25 minutes away.
Rooms
Spacious with marble bathrooms and terraces; some with fireplaces and 42-inch flat-screens
Rooms are spacious and combine Moroccan architectural features, such as arched doorways and windows, with modern decor, including white stucco walls and vibrant pop art. All rooms have marble bathrooms with showers, steel four-poster beds, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and terraces or balconies. Deluxe Rooms have fireplaces, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, minibars, Nespresso machines, and surprisingly vast bathrooms -- some with walk-in rainfall showers and separate soaking tubs decked out in black marble. The Deluxe Rooms feel big and airy, with gauzy white curtains brushing along rough brick floors; black wood detailing provides contrast, as do sculpted lamps and light fixtures against the rustic brick fireplaces. Some rooms are arranged around traditional interior courtyards.
Features
Multiple outdoor pools, playground, hip restaurant, and pool bar
The Murano seeks to emulate a bit of Parisian nightlife on the weekends, with live DJs playing dance music from the covered outdoor pool bar. One of the riad buildings houses another bar and the restaurant, which has a limited menu, but does serve olive oil made from olives harvested in the hotel's gardens. Pastries are made in-house too, with condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise produced in the kitchen. Four outdoor pools dot the manicured property, so one is never far from any particular riad; the pools are not heated. A spa has another plunge pool and steam rooms with the usual range of massage and facial treatments. For smaller guests, there's also a playground area with swings and a trampoline.
