Scene

A serene and luxurious retreat from the hectic buzz of Marrakech

A long carpet bordered with Moroccan lanterns welcomes guests to La Sultana, a haven in the midst of Marrakech's somewhat frenzied old city. The renovated 17th century riad (actually a collaboration of five riads) is the epitome of opulent Moroccan style showcasing intricate mosaics, North African-inspired artwork (scenes of the desert and camels) and sculpture, and hand-carved woodwork. Rich in color and texture at every turn, the hotel attracts well-seasoned travelers seeking quiet and luxury within walking distance to major attractions. Guests have plenty of options to find privacy to read and socialize or simply relax after a day in the souks. The hotel's rose-colored lobby is a cozy space with comfortable seating nooks, a fireplace, and a striking crystal chandelier. Airy courtyards lined with elaborate and colorful tile work and framed with cream-colored columns and arches invite guests to linger while the shimmering pool surrounded by cushy white lounge chairs is a cool retreat shaded by wispy palms, hot pink bougainvillea, and tall courtyard walls. The rooftop terrace and bar is the hotel's prime space with a collection of crescent-shaped chairs and cocktail tables offering ideal perches for enjoying a drink and gazing upon the sprawling, Red City.

Location

In the heart of Marrakech's old city (the Medina), close to major attractions

La Sultana is located in a small alley along the narrow streets of Marrakech's old city (the Medina). It's just under a 15-minute walk south of Jemaa el Fna, the Medina's main marketplace and square. It's also close to the tourist attractions such as Badi Palace, the Bab Agnaou gate, and the gardens and pavilions of the Royal Palace.- Two-minute walk to Bab Agnaou

  • Five-minute walk to the Royal Palace
  • Six-minute walk to Badi Palace
  • 10 minutes walk to the Jemaa el-Fna Square and the Souks
  • 10-minute drive to Royal Golf Course
  • 14-minute drive to Amelkis Golf Course
  • 15-minute drive to the Marrakech airport
  • 1-hour and 15-minute drive to Oukaimeden
  • 2-hour and 15-minute drive to Safi

Rooms

Unique guest rooms and suites with distinct Moroccan style, some with fireplaces and private terraces

Moorish decor and Moroccan furnishings are prominent in all of the hotel's 28 rooms and suites. Entry-level Prestige rooms are located in the smaller wing of the hotel while the slightly larger Prestige Deluxe rooms are scattered throughout the property. Junior Suites are found at the hotel's outdoor lounge area near the front of the hotel while the Deluxe Suites offer private balconies overlooking the pool. Traditional riad style dictates a home with a central patio where windows overlook the interior rather than exterior, meaning that rooms without balconies lack natural light.Rooms are colorful (with rich blues, reds, and greens) and individually decorated featuring African animal artwork and decor that's on-style with specific themes. For example, the Zebra Suite is a black and white showcase with black marble floors, zebra print fabric on chairs and sofas, a zebra rug, and framed artwork of zebras. Other rooms such as the Jaguar Suite are more on point with Moroccan style, finished with rose-colored walls, neutral marble floors, ruby-red fabrics, Moroccan-style lanterns and sconces, and rich cedar-beamed ceilings. All rooms come equipped with king-size beds, Pioneer sound systems, free Wi-Fi, and minibars stocked with non-alcoholic drinks. Bathrooms are over-the-top boudoir style, finished in marble and zellige (Moroccan tile) with deep soaking tubs, separate showers with over-sized rain-shower heads, and lots of gold accents.

Features

A courtyard pool, a sprawling rooftop bar, and an intimate spa

La Sultana offers all of the property features one would expect from a luxury boutique. The pool in particular is a highlight; it's located in a lovely courtyard surrounded by brick arches, lovely greenery, and cushioned loungers. It's more peaceful than the pool at La Maison Arabe, which is adjacent to outdoor restaurant seating, and larger than the pool at Riad Kniza.  - The restaurant serves traditional seasonal Moroccan cuisine available in a multi-course tasting menu or a la carte with seating on the rooftop during the summer and on the patio during the winter months.

  • Daily morning cooking classes
  • Spa with two hammams, a hot tub, sauna, beauty salon, balneotherapy baths, open-air massage cabins, and a variety of treatments and rituals
  • Small gym, which the Riad Kniza and La Maison Arabe lack
