Ecolodge Quaryati, about a 45-minute drive from central Marrakech, is an upper middle-range, eco-friendly complex. Its 41 air-conditioned rooms are modern yet traditionally simple, with balconies or patios. Some of the Suites and detached two- or three-bedroom villas have rooftop terraces with lovely views of the countryside and Atlas Mountains, along with satellite TV. Food is a highlight here, prepared with organic produce from nearby farms, and the swimming pool is large -- if a little cold. Hammam, scrubs, and massage treatments are available on-site. The reasonably priced Ecolodge Quaryati is for those after a secluded, peaceful,
countryside retreat in a rustic setting.
Scene
Secluded Berber village-style lodge with eco-friendly credentials
Driving up a bumpy narrow road, visitors pass through a set of metal
gates between high walls and into the remote complex of the Ecolodge Quaryati.
Built in 2008, the property comprises two small Berber-style villages built
from traditional adobe as well as a riad-type villa. Peacocks strut around
its 17 acres of grounds that are filled with olive groves and more than 2,000 rose bushes.
The rural setting offers a sense of peaceful seclusion -- the vast open
landscape stretches to the imposing and spectacular scenery of the Atlas
Mountains. Staff comes from the
surrounding villages, and the food from nearby organic farms, creating a genuinely
eco-friendly environment that helps supports the local population.
Location
Remote and secluded rural setting 45 minutes southeast of Marrakech
The hotel is
about a 45-minute drive southeast of Marrakech -- it's about 30
minutes on the highway, and then on a bumpy dirt road for the rest of the trip (red arrows direct drivers to the
property). While remote and isolated, it offers easy access to the picturesque
Atlas Mountains and the Ourika Valley -- the hotel will organize tours. The hotel also offers a free shuttle between Quaryati and the bustling souks of Marrakech -- it leaves in the morning and returns at the end of the day -- and, for a fee, transfers to and from Marrakech Menara International
Airport, about 40 minutes away.
Rooms
Modern yet traditionally rustic rooms and villas -- some with rooftop terraces and multiple rooms
The complex has
four distinct types of accommodation (all spacious, clean, and quiet) from the Berber -- a simple,
rustic-style room with basic wooden furnishings -- to the Atlas and Quaryati
Pavilions -- detached, two- and three-bedroom, two-floor villas with furnished patios. Some of the Suites and pavilions have rooftop terraces with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. Amenities consist of little beyond TVs (both old-style and flat-screen with in the satellite channels in the Suites and Pavilions),
air-conditioning, and hairdryers, with no Wi-Fi.
Features
Outstanding food from local organic farms and free bicycle loan
One real highlight
at the lodge is its food -- which is good, as there aren't any other restaurants
nearby. A buffet breakfast of homemade yogurts, Moroccan pancakes,
freshly squeezed juice, and cooked-to-order eggs is served each morning. An a
la carte lunch menu is served overlooking the pool while a three-course dinner
of Moroccan specialties (from local organic farms) is available in the evening.
The large swimming pool is surrounded by plenty of sun loungers, but it's
not heated and the water is often cold. The hotel has two private steam rooms for the traditional hammam, along with body scrubs and massage treatments. Wi-Fi is free of
charge in the reception area, and the loan of mountain bikes is also free of
charge.
