Set around a central inner courtyard, this Moroccan riad has turned its traditional layout into something altogether design-conscious and stunning. Almost every aspect of the hotel's public areas has been given attention, with soft white walls complementing grays and earth tones at every turn. Guests are welcomed with traditional pastries and Moroccan beverages. There are Moroccan archways and twinkling light fixtures in wall recessions, and there are plenty of places for guests to sit on low couches laid with brightly colored woven throw pillows under pressed tin lamps (or in the gorgeous courtyard). Contemporary, minimalist leather furniture looks sharp underneath the light spilling down from above in the courtyard, and potted plants give the space an oasis-like calm. Distressed hardwood accents throughout add a rustic dose of luxury. The hotel almost exclusively draws couples, as it's an undeniably romantic escape, though a few families stay here as well. There are no elevators in the building, though, and guests with mobility issues should contact the hotel in advance. 

Set within the walls of the old medina, the hotel sits on a narrow cobblestone street, flanked by shops selling trinkets and local handcrafts. The town's medina was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites in 2001. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes within the walls of the medina and it's a hyper-photogenic area of town that's perfect for lazy strolls. Essaouira is not serviced by train, and the Supratours buses that act as a link to cities like Marrakesh stop about ten minutes away on foot from the hotel -- a staff member will meet guests at the terminal with some advance notice. The Skala de la Ville, an 18th century fortress built by European colonizers, is a four-minute walk from the hotel. The town also has a beach. It's nice for walking, though it's not ideal for sunbathing or swimming, and can be found a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The airport takes about 20 minutes to reach by taxi or car. 

Crafted wood bedside tables, built-in cushioned seating, and traditional tadelakt walls (lime that has been treated with wax and whitewashed in many instances) give these rooms a chic, cozy ambience. The effect is enhanced by recessed lighting, tiled floors, and handsome wooden doors in light shades that lend a calming vibe to these spare, elegantly furnished rooms. Fireplaces up the romance factor, and hand-woven throw rugs enhance the rustic look of the heavy wooden bed frames and nightstands. Decor varies slightly from room to room, but all utilize a combination of grays, soft browns, and sand colors throughout. Each room also include air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, but no televisions or mini-fridges. Some rooms also have private balconies. Bathrooms are especially luxurious, with heated floors and towel racks, bathrobes, and toiletries. The bathroom spaces vary in configuration, but all include tadelakt walls, travertine and marble floors and vanities, and almost royal bathing facilities, from tubs that are accessed through keyhole archways and showers that sit at the bottom of a short set of steps. There are no elevators in the building, and guest rooms are accessed by stairs.

The food here is excellent and starts with a free breakfast that features items like crepes and eggs. Lunch and dinner are available on request and must be ordered ahead of time. Both meals are created with local produce and seafood. Meals can be taken in the courtyard or in guest rooms, and snacks and refreshments are available throughout the day. There is a traditional hammam on site and there is a hot tub on the roof. It sits in the middle of a stylish wooden deck with lounge chairs that's in turn surrounded by a tiled terrace set with chairs and tables as well as potted succulents. The hotel has a guest lounge with a computer station and library, and in-room massage and beauty services are also available. The front desk is available to help guests with tour and ticket bookings and taxi services can be arranged. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
