ClubHotel Riu
Tikida Palmeraie is an upscale, all-inclusive family-friendly resort located in the Palmeraie, about a 15-minute drive -- without traffic -- to the medina. The 388 air-conditioned rooms include Doubles, which come with mini-fridges, satellite TV, and terraces, and Junior Suites, with living room areas and sofa beds. Packed with activities, the resort includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools with a poolside bar (the all-inclusive package includes unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks), a kids' club and pool, three restaurants, a sun terrace, a gym, a spa with traditional hammam, whirlpool and massages, a sports center, tennis courts, nightly entertainment, even an art program. Spread out over a large palm grove, the modern resort was built in the adobe style, and decorative Moroccan touches punctuate its rooms and sprawling interior. It's not exactly an intimate, quiet riad filled with authentic charm and color, but it's a good choice for travelers seeking an all-inclusive vacation experience outside the Marrakech hubbub but still within easy reach of the Red City's sights.
Scene
All-inclusive family-friendly resort hotel set in spacious gardens
Arriving at the ClubHotel Riu Tikida Palmeraie -- with its red-and-white
striped guarded barriers, manicured grounds, and drive-up entrance -- there's
no mistaking that it's a large resort-style chain property. Inside, the lobby is smart and spacious, with contemporary furnishings dotted around a
lavish centerpiece chandelier illuminating a minimalist water feature below. The
complex comprises a collection of low-rise adobe-style buildings connected
by meandering pathways that cut through sprawling well-tended gardens -- full
of palm trees, giant cacti, and flowering plants. As an all-inclusive resort, its clientele is mostly made up of package-deal vacationers and families with kids taking advantage of its plentiful activities and space.
Location
Set in the peaceful Palmeraie, a 15- to 20-minute drive from bustling Marrakech
The hotel is
located east of Marrakech in the Palmeraie, in an area surrounded by palm groves, olive
trees, a few other resorts, and golf courses, with little within walking distance. It's positioned just off the main N9 highway that connects to the bustling souks and sights of the medina. The hotel provides free, daily roundtrip shuttle service into Marrakech several times a day, and taxis are not too expensive. Marrakech Menara
International Airport is about a half hour's drive away.
Rooms
Clean and spacious rooms with furnished terraces or balconies -- though no Wi-Fi
Golf buggies
whisk guests to one of the hotel's 388 rooms, which include Suites with separate living areas and sofa beds. Rooms are large and modern, decorated in neutral browns and beige with some traditional Moroccan
touches, and open onto furnished balconies or terraces. While kept particularly clean, some rooms are a little dark and a few
are starting to show signs of wear. Rooms include telephones, safes, mini-fridges, and flat-screen
TVs with satellite channels -- though there's no in-room Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are
well-maintained with wall-mounted hairdryers, shower/tub combos, and (sachet) toiletries.
Features
Plenty of child-friendly facilities, and unlimited drinks
The all-inclusive
plan includes a varied breakfast buffet with cooked-to-order items, as well
as lunch and dinner buffets and twice weekly themed nights. Separate Moroccan
and Italian restaurants are also open for dinner, but tables must be reserved in
advance. Food is generally good but can start to get repetitive, but drinks, including local and imported beverages (and alcoholic
drinks), are unlimited. The large outdoor pool is popular with families, and it can
get crowded and noisy when the hotel is full -- and the water can be
cold. There's several organized activities, a separate pool and playroom for kids, as
well as a wide range of leisure facilities such as two tennis courts, ping-pong, shuffleboard, a hammam
spa, a fitness center, a heated (in winter) indoor pool, with golf nearby. Wi-Fi is available only in the lobby, which can consequently get busy.
