Panoramic View
272 Old Montauk Hwy

This sprawling resort tucked away on scenic Old Montauk Highway takes the word "panoramic" seriously: Every room comes with a direct ocean view and private patio or balcony. The 10-acre site is situated on a hillside and includes pretty walkways, an outdoor pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, and private beach access. Rooms are large and lovely, and amenities are plentiful -- but you’ll need a car to get to restaurants and nightlife.

Montauk Blue Hotel
108 South Emerson Avenue

Renovated in 2014, the Montauk Blue Hotel is a modest budget property with clean, modern rooms and a great location right on the beach. Although the hotel has few on-site amenities, it's close to a number of shops and some rooms lead right out onto the sand. In addition to free parking and free Wi-Fi, the property also offers a clean and spacious indoor pool and whirlpool, as well as a large oceanfront deck for sunbathing. There is no on-site restaurant or gift shop, but vending machines are available and there are a number of restaurants nearby.

Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa
290 Old Montauk Highway

The 109-room, upscale Gurney's Montauk stands out among Hamptons hotels, quite literally: It's one of the largest resorts in the area, and it also has the best beachfront location. No other Montauk resort compares in terms of features, and no Hamptons resort can match its truly terrific, and massive, stretch of sand. The free spa facilities (including an indoor pool and Roman bath) are also a highlight. Ongoing renovations have made (most of) the rooms contemporary and attractive, and many have stunning ocean views from private verandas. The elegant fine-dining restaurant also has views of the water. Just note that there have been some minor growing pains as this older property -- once a time-share resort popular with local Long Islanders -- transitions to a Hamptons hot spot.

Aqualina Inn Montauk
20 S Elmwood Ave

Aqualina Inn Montauk is a laid-back seasonal budget inn geared toward beachgoers. Situated between the beach and downtown Montauk, it's only a few minutes' walk from each. Highlights of the hotel include an outdoor pool surrounded by loungers and a central courtyard with picnic tables and grills. There’s few other property features -- guests are on their own for breakfast, and check-in is at the sister hotel next door -- but the inn does offer free loaner bikes and beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and sports items. The property’s 22 rooms have bright beachy decor with wood floors, rustic wood furnishings, flat-screen TVs with Netflix, and self-catering amenities like microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers; upgrades add whirlpool tubs or balconies. Travelers can compare rates with its sister hotel, The Ocean Resort Inn, or the beachfront Montauk Blue Hotel nearby.

Ocean Surf Resort
84 S Emerson Ave

The main highlight of this budget property is its beachfront location that's within a five-minute walk of restaurants and the Hampton Jitney stop. It's a simple and modest (but clean) property, and it doesn't offer many features beyond a gorgeous outdoor pool with an attractive sundeck and sweeping views of the beach. All 26 rooms have kitchenettes with microwaves, two-burner stoves (except Silver Studios) and fridges, plus free Wi-Fi. Many rooms also have beach views, some with private balconies/patios.  Note that upper-floor rooms cost extra and breakfast is not served. Kenny's Tipperary Inn is a comparable alternative that offers similar amenities and rooms, all with balconies/patios, but it's not beachfront.

Montauk Manor
236 Edgemere St

Built in 1927 as a getaway for the rich and famous, Montauk Manor is a Tudor Revival-style hotel perched on a grassy hilltop overlooking the water. This three-pearl 12-acre property has a quiet vibe and is just a short drive (or free shuttle trip) from town. The 140 privately owned condo-style units have kitchens and flat-screen TVs -- many also include balconies or terraces -- but decor varies considerably and bathrooms tend to be dated. The hotel features tennis courts, heated indoor and outdoor pools, and organic spa treatments. An on-site Italian restaurant serves all meals, but there's no room service. For something with a more youthful vibe and modern style that's closer to the beach, travelers should check out the nearby Sole East, although rates are higher.

Royal Atlantic Beach Resorts
126 S Emerson Ave

The best thing about the lower-middle-range, 150-room Royal Atlantic Beach Resorts is the location of its main building, which is directly on the beachfront and within walking distance of Montauk town center. Guest rooms on the ground floor have direct access to the beautiful 1.61 mile-long sandy beach. Rooms, which have kitchenettes and balconies, are spread over three motel-style buildings (only one is on the beach). But decor is dated and overdue for an update, and guests have complained about cleanliness. Travelers might want to also consider Driftwood on the Ocean, a comparable property offering cottage-style rooms and more amenities, such as a fitness center and sports facilities, a communal lounge, and a laundry room.

Kenny's Tipperary Inn
432 W Lake Dr, P.O. Box 5015

The two-and-a-half-pearl Kenny’s Tipperary Inn offers charming and tidy accommodations for a relatively affordable price in Montauk. It isn't within walking distance of the town center or any major hotspots, but it's in a peaceful location about a five-minute walk to Lake Montauk and to the Block Island Ferry. With its well-tended grounds, Zen garden, gazebo, and fire pits, Kenny’s exudes local character -- and there's a seasonal outdoor pool -- but breakfast isn't available on-site. Its 33 units come with shared or private balconies or patios, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Apartments with kitchens are also available. Travelers looking to stay across the street from beach can consider the nearby Haven Montauk, but room rates tend to be a little pricier.

Hero Beach Club
626 Old Montauk Hwy

Hero Beach Club is an upper-middle-range hotel situated an easy walk from shopping and dining at Montauk's Plaza. The 30 rooms and suites are bright and airy, with lots of light wood paired with light-blue, ocean-inspired accents. Many rooms come with balconies, but they lack coffee- and tea-making facilities and there have been complaints of noise from other rooms. Amenities are limited, and while there is free breakfast service of coffee and bagels, the hotel lacks a restaurant. The pool is big and heated in the cooler months, and there is a large grassy lawn with additional patio furniture where weekly events such as s'mores roasting and movie nights take place. A small spa is also on-site. Overall, it's a good value, but there are competitively priced options in the area, such as the Montauk Manor, which offers condo-style lodging.

Montauk Soundview Resort Hotel
6 Soundview Dr, P O Box 85

The Montauk Soundview Resort Hotel is a cozy and quiet mid-range property sitting right on Napeague Bay. The hotel offers a relaxed, self-catering stay away from the crowds, but within a five-minute walk of the restaurants and shops near famous Gosman's Dock. The 23 apartments and cottages have televisions, Wi-Fi, full kitchens or kitchenettes, and outdoor space that ranges from a small lawn to water-view balconies. Decor varies from room to room, and while some feel a little more worn than others, most have a pleasant beachy look. Grills next the water, a good-size outdoor pool, and coin-operated laundry room are all handy features for families. For easier beach access and a similar family-friendly vibe, the Beachcomber Resort is a competitively priced alternative.
