The NH Milano Touring is a modern, perfectly adequate upscale hotel just north of Milan's center. It won't win any design awards, but is clean, functional, and provides a comfortable -- albeit characterless -- place to stay within walking distance of two metro stops, though it's a bit of a trek to the Duomo Cathedral by foot. Rooms vary a lot in terms of decor and ambience, so ask for a renovated room or consider an upgrade. Breakfast is free and Pianoterra Bar and Restaurant get high marks for local specialties. Rates are pretty average for the area, so for somewhere with a little more character, check out the nearby Hotel Manin.

Smart, functional, and decidedly average
From its unremarkable modern-meets-neoclassical frontage to the inoffensively muted neutral tones of the lobby, the NH Milano Touring makes little effort to be anything more than functional, yet decidedly average. Business-like reception desks are efficiently staffed and flanked by the only signs of plant life in the lobby, while seating areas are practical and formal, matching the general ambience. The bar area is fun. Lipstick-red sofas and large windows overlooking the street add light and color to the space. The clientele are primarily corporate guests, although the occasional Italian politician has been known to stay the night.

North of Milan's city center five minute's walk from the metro
The hotel is located just north of Milan's city center, about a 15-minute walk to the famous Duomo. The nearest metro station is Turati, a five-minute walk away and the pretty Indro Montanelli public park is just a block away. Something to keep in mind is that the hotel sits outside of Area C in Milan, meaning a ticket isn't required for all vehicles entering the hotel, though there isn't any on-site parking here. Milan Linate Airport is a 25-minute drive away with traffic.

The hotel has 282 rooms, comprising Standard Rooms (with slightly dated decor), Superior Rooms (much fresher), and Deluxe Rooms (larger, with contemporary decor). In-room amenities are what you'd expect from this caliber of hotel and include minibars, coffee-makers, and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, plus a choice of pillows. Renovated rooms have hardwood floors and either white minimalist decor or bright green contemporary details. There's a lot of discrepancy in quality between the older rooms, which have a slight motel look to them, and those that have been renovated, so it's worth asking for a newer room.
