Bottom Line

The Lancaster Hotel is a small, three-pearl property with plenty of old world charm and a quiet, yet picturesque location away from the bustle of Milan's center. For some, it's a bit too far away: Expect at least a 20-minute walk to the Duomo Cathedral. The hotel provides free breakfast and Wi-Fi, but charges for parking. Rooms have luxe details for this price point, like marble bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. For better access to public transportation, compare rates at the Best Western Hotel Atlantic.

Scene

Five-story Art Nouveau hotel

The scene at The Lancaster Hotel is mostly quiet as guests leave the property for the day to explore Milan. The property was built with palace architecture in an Art Nouveau style, but solar panels were recently added for an eco-friendly touch. Inside, the lobby has cherrywood details and marble floors. The bar and lounge is accessed through floor-to-ceiling pillars. There are a few bar stools in front of the long wooden bar counter.

Location

In the residential neighborhood of Sempione

The Lancaster Hotel is ideal for those arriving to Milan with a car as it's outside of Area C, which both charges for and restricts car access. The location is easily accessible from all of the major highways of Milan, which means fast access to areas of interest outside the city center. Parking is nearby the hotel, but there's a daily charge for it. The neighborhood of Sempione, where the hotel is located, is mostly quiet and residential. There are shops and businesses within a few blocks. The Palace of Peace and Art is a local interest point. Expect a 20 to 30-minute walk to the Duomo Cathedral, though strolling through Sempione Park to get there is a real pleasure.

Rooms

Clean and classic

There are just 30 rooms at The Lancaster Hotel with the option of booking a single, double, or triple -- some have romantic Juliet-style furnished balconies. The decor is classic with touches like cherrywood furniture and marble bathrooms. Air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars are standard. You'll need to upgrade to a superior room to get a bathtub and double sinks; otherwise, it's a tiny stall shower and single sink. All bathrooms have toiletries and hairdryers. Views overlook the quiet streets or an attractive courtyard with neighboring roofs. Cleanliness isn't an issue. Wi-Fi is free.

Features

Free breakfast

Because this is a small middle-range property, there aren't many features to be found. Free breakfast is a nice perk and it can be delivered directly to your room for a fee, but there isn't an on-site restaurant for lunch or dinner. A full bar serves coffees, cocktails, and wine. If you must have a fitness center and restaurant, you'll probably pay a bit more and end up at a chain hotel in a bustling neighborhood. Try comparing rates at the BEST WESTERN Hotel Galles.
