In an unattractive area
The Hotel Terminal -- part of the small Alfa Hotels chain -- provides basic, budget lodging close to the Milano Centrale train station and the Sondrio metro stop, a few stops from the city center and the Duomo. Rooms are large, clean, and modern and have hardwood floors, but they lack coffee- and tea-makers. Rates, while often low, don’t include breakfast, and the decor throughout is bland and old-fashioned. Travelers looking for more stylish accommodations -- and who don’t mind paying a little bit more -- can try the nearby Biocity Hotel, which has an eco-friendly theme.
Scene
Budget hotel with dated, uninspired decor
The Hotel Terminal's dated decor, such as antique-looking couches upholstered in dull red fabrics, matches the older look of the building, but instead of coming off as charming, it looks thrown together. There’s a bar off the lobby, but the gold-and-red banquet chairs -- the same chairs that are used in the windowless breakfast room and the bland meeting room -- appear to be an afterthought. Bright flower arrangements are a nice touch, and everything is in good condition, but there’s not much reason to linger in this budget property.
Location
Close to the central train station and a short metro ride to the Duomo
The hotel is located on a street parallel to the train tracks, and the main entrance to the Milano Centrale train station is a 10-minute walk away. The neighborhood is not the most charming, but there are plenty of restaurants and shops -- as well as a supermarket -- nearby. The Sondrio metro stop is a five-minute walk away, and it’s a 15-minute ride to central Milan and the Duomo. The hotel is a 20-minute walk to the Corso Buenos Aires, the popular shopping street. The Malpensa airport is a 40-minute drive or a little over an hour away via public transportation.
Rooms
Large and clean rooms with bland decor
The 47 rooms come in single, double, and triple configurations and are spacious and clean, with hardwood floors. Rooms have small flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes, but no coffee- or tea-making facilities. The decor -- while in good condition -- is bland, and includes basic floral comforters, plain wood furniture, and generic artwork, which varies from room to room. For example, one of the Single Rooms has bright built-in aqua furniture and blue tile in the bathroom, but the overall look is cheap. In general, bathrooms are spacious, with glass-walled shower/tub combos.
Features
Basic breakfast, lobby bar, and pets allowed free of charge
A continental breakfast, with cereals, breads, cheeses, fruit, coffee, and croissants, is available each morning, but it costs extra. A basic bar sits off the lobby. There’s also a small, simple meeting room and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Pets are allowed at no extra charge. Laundry services and private covered parking are available for an additional fee.
