Guests of the two-pearl Hotel RossoVino are welcomed with a glass of wine when checking in, setting a nice and relaxed tone for a stay here. The quiet, residential location adds to that vibe, though it also means relying on the tram or taxis to reach big attractions like the Duomo. The 14 rooms have a basic, dorm-like style, and all include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. However, air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms aren't standard. On-street private parking is available (for a fee) and guests are offered a free croissant and coffee for breakfast. Those seeking a more stylish hotel closer to the city center might consider the Hotel Delizia instead, which has a bar, breakfast room, and 24-hour reception, though rates are higher.
Scene
Pleasant, wine-themed budget hotel with a mostly quiet atmosphere
From the outside, Hotel RossoVino looks every bit the typical, three-story Italian villa that it is. Neat brick work and a white, second-floor balcony certainly earn some style points. However, once inside, the wine-themed, modern decor doesn’t hide the fact that this small property is more akin to a youth hostel than a hotel. There are some nice touches, like shelves stocked with wine bottles in the tiny lobby, and flashes of punchy, modern-art-work. In the end, though, the decor and furniture are budget quality and uninspiring. As such, RossoVino tends to attract younger customers, especially couples and small groups of friends who are out and about all day (and night) and who are happy to take a cheaper option away from the city center.
Location
On a private road near Viale Corsica, amid authentic cafes and Italian restaurants
Hotel Rosso Vino is hidden away on a quiet, private street just off of Viale Corsica. It can be difficult to find, so look out for the large Simply Market, which is nearby. There are several authentic local cafes and restaurants nearby (check out Trattoria del Nuovo Macello, a 10-minute walk from the hotel), but otherwise expect to use public transit to get around. The Duomo is a 25-minute metro ride from Milano Porto Vittoria Metro station (a five-minute walk from the hotel). From there, it’s a two-minute walk to the famous Galleria di Milano mall, and then a pleasant seven-minute walk to Museo Poldi Pezzoli. There are also tram stops along Viale Corsica, within a five-minute walk. The airport bus to Linate Airport puts guests within a 25-minute ride of the terminal (or 10 minutes by cab). Expect commutes of around an hour to Milan Malpensa Airport by either cab or train.
Rooms
Basic, spartan rooms with tiny flat-screen TVs; some with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms
Rooms here are small and budget basic. You'll see simple, flat-box furniture like small, cream-colored desks and cheap, mirrored wardrobes. The off-white palette is punched up a bit by colorful bedspreads, headboards, and curtains, or the odd framed picture or potted plant. Most rooms come with air-conditioning and all have tiny flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Mini-fridges and kettles are available on request. Upper level attic rooms have twin beds and a sofa bed, so it can pay off to ask what the sleeping arrangements are before you book. The front-facing windows on the second floor open out to a Juliet balcony, but views are only of other buildings across the street. Keep in mind that the attic rooms have shared bathrooms, while all other rooms come with en-suite bathrooms. These are tiny and fitted with sliding door, stall showers, bidets, and pedestal sinks. The shared attic bathroom is larger and more modern. While the neighborhood is quiet and traffic noise nonexistent, guests have noted that thin walls mean you can hear noise from neighboring rooms.
Features
Free breakfast pastry and coffee, private parking (for a fee), and free Wi-Fi
The hotel’s quiet, private location is perhaps its main attraction, as there isn't much in the way of features. The free glass of wine upon arriving is nice, and guests are offered a free croissant and coffee for breakfast. Private parking is available on the street outside for a fee, and the hotel will print boarding passes and tickets for free. It's worth noting that the front desk isn't staffed around the clock, though they can be reached by phone. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
