Hotel Berna is an upper-middle-range property near Milan’s main train station. While the lobby and common areas look a bit dated, some rooms are modern, and the hotel provides some cool unique extras such as the ability to select the desired room temperature before arrival. The amenities don’t quite add up to the advertised four-star experience, but the hotel offers a good value for what’s on offer, with guests raving about staff professionalism and attention paid to detail.
Scene
Old-fashioned common areas and (some) modern rooms
Hotel Bernas’s common areas have a traditional look, with red carpeting and a mix of upholstered love seats and armchairs in black, gray, and gold. The overall look is of a historic hotel that was decorated with vintage furniture from the 1970s; hence the decor may be seen as either quaint or tired depending on your tastes. The white and gray renovated guest rooms, accented with modern prints, look like they’re part of a completely different property.
Location
Close to the train station and metro lines, with easy access to major tourist destinations
Hotel Berna is located in a busy area with mid-level restaurants and shops, and is only a couple of blocks from the Milano Centrale railway station. The hotel is also a few blocks from two main metro lines. Thus major tourist attractions like the Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco, and the Via Montenapoleone fashion district are all easily reachable via public transport. Shuttle bus service is also provided to airports.
Rooms
A mix of modern and classic touches with distinctive decor
The updated rooms are very modern, decorated in shades of white, gray, and black, with panels of white interlocking circles used separately as both a room divider and headboard. Some rooms have furniture upholstered in bright red animal-print fabric. Rooms that have not undergone a refresh have old blue and red carpeting and bland wood furniture. Bathrooms in all rooms are tiny, with small stall showers. There are also flat-screen TVs, minibars, kettles with tea and coffee, safes, and hairdryers, plus a rubber duckie in the bathroom (but don’t think of using this during bath time, since there are no tubs). There are 101 rooms in the main building and 16 others in an annex across the street.
Features
Buffet breakfast and personalization of room features along with 24-hour beverages
The hotel has a large buffet breakfast that can be included in the room rate. After making a reservation, guests are contacted and allowed to customize their room by selecting the desired temperature, type of pillows, and types of non-alcoholic beverages to be placed in the minibar, which is refilled throughout the stay. Fruit, croissants, tea, coffee, and water are available 24 hours in the internet lounge, and free Wi-Fi is available as well. There’s also a bar and meeting rooms for business travelers. A parking garage is available for an extra fee, with parking included in Quality and Superior Room rates.
