Despite obvious efforts, the Hotel Mirage can't quite shake of the feel of a chain hotel. This 86-room, midrange hotel is not totally devoid of character, but there's still not a great deal to make it stand out -- rooms are adequate but unremarkable and facilities are pretty much what you'd expect for this type of property. While it's near a tram line, the hotel's location is less than ideal for those headed to Milan's center. However, for people in town for trade fairs at one of the nearby conference centers, the hotel's competitive rates make it a promising choice. BEST WESTERN Hotel Galles has a spa and rooftop restaurant in a more convenient neighborhood.
Scene
Turn-of-the-century New York meets modern chain hotel aesthetic
The exterior of the Hotel Mirage allegedly drew architectural inspiration from New York's famous Flatiron Building, but ever since it became a Best Western in 2013, its modern signage and garish red pillars have given it a chain hotel look. The lobby, too, makes a stab at early 20th-century Manhattan, with large potted plants and plenty of polished stone and wood. Unfortunately, like the facade, the interior struggles to break free from the generic hotel ambience. The hotel's convention center location attracts mostly corporate guests, but it could serve as a decent base for vacationers who don't mind being away from Milan's center.
Location
Walking distance to area convention centers and on tram line to central Milan
The Mirage is about a 15-minute drive northwest of central Milan, and a seven-minute drive to the A4 highway that connects Brescia and Turin. The tram 14 stops outside the property and takes about half an hour to reach central Milan. The hotel is close to many of Milan's convention centers, including Fiera Milano International, a 10 minute walk away, and Fiera Milano City, which takes about 20 minutes on foot. The hotel also provides a free shuttle service to the major trade fairs held at these centers. There's a restaurant located just across the street.
Rooms
Small, traditionally styled rooms with parquet floors, AC, and free Wi-Fi
The BEST WESTERN Hotel Mirage has 86 rooms, all of which are decorated in a traditional style with modern wood furnishings and parquet floors. Green striped bed runners match the curtains. Rooms have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with satellite and pay-per-view movies. Mosaic tiled bathrooms include bidets, telephones, and walk-in showers or jetted tubs. Some rooms have heated towel racks and bathrobes are always supplied. Despite soundproofing, some lower-level rooms suffer from traffic noise. Rooms are on the small side and some are lacking views
Features
Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, secure on-site parking, and an on-site gym
A free buffet breakfast is served each morning in the Mirage Restaurant, which also serves traditional Italian dishes for dinner. Other amenities include meeting rooms and a small gym with a stationary bicycle and a weight machine. There is a small bar in the lobby as well as an Internet corner with two terminals. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property and is free of charge. The hotel has limited parking in a garage that has an automatic elevator for cars, but expect to pay for the privilege. Small pets are allowed with advance notice.
