Bottom Line

The Antares Hotel Rubens is a small, three-and-a-half-pearl hotel in west Milan. It's convenient for both tourists and business travelers, with easy access to the historic center and convention centers via the metro. The 87 rooms are spacious -- with beautiful updated bathrooms -- though the decor is a bit dated. Amenities include a gym, a wine bar, and a free buffet breakfast with hot dishes (and even a pancake maker) served in a room with large windows overlooking the nearby square. Business travelers who want to walk to the Fiera Milano City exhibition center and MiCo Milano Congressi may prefer the Antares Hotel Accademia, though it’s not as convenient to tourist attractions and rates are usually higher.

Scene

Small hotel with a mix of modern and dated design elements

Antares Hotel Rubens is a mix of modern and dated design. The lobby and adjoining wine bar have a bold yellow, black, and red color scheme, with sparkly round light fixtures and art on the walls. The fifth-floor breakfast room has floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the square below, but purple and green floral carpeting and fake plants that sit on top of columns make it feel a little less sophisticated. The atmosphere is elegant, but some consistency would make it better. The hotel's location and amenities attract business travelers and tourists alike.

Location

In a residential area of western Milan, close to a metro stop and a 15-minute ride into the center

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area in western Milan. There aren’t many restaurants nearby, but there are bars, supermarkets, and shops in the vicinity, and the popular Gelateria Rembrandt is a five-minute walk down the street. Corso Vercelli, a popular shopping street, is a 10-minute walk away, and Santa Maria delle Grazie -- known for houseing Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper --  is a 30-minute walk. The Gambara metro stop is a five-minute walk, and it’s a 15-minute metro ride into the historic center. For business travelers, the hotel is a seven-minute drive (or around 20 minutes by metro) to the Fiera Milano City exhibition center, the MiCo Milano convention center, and San Siro Stadium. Malpensa Airport is a 40-minute drive or an hour via the Malpensa Express, which leaves from Cadorna Station, five metro stops away.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with dated decor but modern bathrooms

The 87 units  -- which include 12 Junior Suites and one Suite -- are large, but the updated bathrooms are the only aspect that feels modern. Amenities in all rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars, hairdryers, and safes, though they lack coffee- and tea-making facilities.  Decor is dated, albeit in a slightly charming way, with arched doorways, classic artwork, and floral wallpaper. Standard Rooms have hardwood floors, while suites have basic blue or red carpeting. The renovated bathrooms are spacious and luxurious, and have shower/tub combos or walk-in showers with both handheld shower hoses and rainfall showerheads.

Features

Free breakfast with hot dishes, lobby wine bar, and small gym

A free buffet breakfast -- which includes a pancake machine -- is served in the fifth-floor Sala delle Nuvole, which has panoramic views of the nearby square from floor-to-ceiling windows. The restaurant also serves lunch and can be rented out for business dinners. The lobby’s Pandia Wine Bar serves snacks and light meals along with drinks and is open late. Room service is available and coffee is served early in the morning for guests departing before breakfast. There’s also a  small gym with cardio and weight machines and three meeting rooms. Laundry and ticket booking services are available from reception. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
