Bottom Line

The Idea Hotel is a 105-room, mid-range hotel in a central, quiet Milan neighborhood. It’s a short walk to Navigli, a charming and lively historic district with canals and plenty of bars and restaurants. Rooms are small and simple, but some have views of the Duomo in the distance. And rates include a free and varied buffet breakfast in a modern, colorful room. It's a decent value given the great location -- but can feel a bit overpriced when you figure in fees for Wi-Fi. Travelers looking for something with a touch more history could try the three-pearl Biocity Hotel.

Scene

Modern and sleek without being severe

The hotel’s drab exterior isn't particularly memorable and gives the look of an apartment building. But by contrast, the lobby and breakfast room are new and modern, with hardwood floors, walls painted teal and lime green, and conical glass light fixtures. The lobby has a lounge area with black leather couches, a Plexiglas coffee table, and a small flat-screen TV. Three clocks set to New York, Tokyo, and Milan time sit behind the streamlined silver desk topped with a display of baked goods under a glass dome. The overall look and feel is sleek but simple and comfortable.

Location

In a quiet residential area, within walking distance of Navigli and the Duomo

The hotel sits on a quiet, tree-lined street, a 10-minute walk from Navigli, the historic, canal-filled neighborhood with a variety of restaurants and bars along with much of Milan’s nightlife. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Sant'Ambrogio metro station and a 20-minute walk to the Duomo. More local attractions include the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, 10 minutes away on foot, and the Museum of Science and Technology, 15 minutes on foot. It’s a 45-minute drive to the Malpensa Airport and or about an hour via public transportation.

Rooms

Small rooms with spartan decor, some with Duomo views

The Idea's 105 rooms are clean and bright, but feel cramped and have simple decor. There’s light-colored, basic wood furniture, and red-and-white striped curtains that add a bit of cheer. Lovely illustrations of Milan on the walls add a nice touch, and some rooms have views of the Duomo spires. All rooms come with small flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Bathrooms are small but clean, with black-and-white checkered floors, sinks with narrow counters, branded Idea toiletries, and walk-in showers with modern fixtures.

Features

Pet-friendly hotel with free buffet breakfast; fee for Wi-Fi and parking

The hotel serves a free buffet breakfast with a variety of items, including scrambled eggs, fruit, cereals and cakes. Wi-Fi is available for a fee, but small pets stay free of charge. Parking in a private lot is available for a fee, and laundry services can be arranged through the front desk.
