Bottom Line

The 329-room Zermatt Resort and Spa brings Swiss style to Utah’s beautiful Wasatch Mountains, with a geothermal spring, on-site ski rentals and close slope access, and connected indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The large, four-pearl resort also has two tennis courts, a full-service spa, a few different dining options, 19 conference rooms, and a business center. Country-style rooms, suites, villas, and townhouses are available, and some come with kitchens and/or fireplaces, but dated decor and reportedly inconsistent housekeeping may turn some people off. The Marriott’s Mountainside in Park City gets better ratings for its rooms, but the rates can be much higher.

Scene

Swiss-style lodge with Alpine decor and beautiful mountain views

Named after a town in Switzerland, the Zermatt Resort and Spa recreates a European alpine lodge atmosphere. Built in 2006, the resort features five floors and an exterior that looks like a Swiss chalet. The eclectic lobby is decorated in wooden wall paneling, Swiss sculptures and artwork, and lodge decor. A lovely fireplace lounge offers comfy leather chairs and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the wooded property. Pathways -- lit with garden lamps -- wind through the grounds, and there are views of the Wasatch mountain range in the distance.

Location

Nestled in Midway near the ski slopes

The resort is located in a residential part of Midway at the bottom of the Wasatch Mountains and two minutes by car to the Wasatch Mountain State Park. A nearby 10,000-year-old geothermal spring offers cave tours, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The Crater Springs Golf Course is a seven-minute walk. Walmart, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Walgreens are 12 minutes by car, while a drive to the State Liquor Store takes 23 minutes. The Park City Mountain Resort, the Deer Valley Resort, and Sundance are all around half an hour away. Salt Lake City and its airport are just short of an hour from Zermatt Resort.

Rooms

Range of lodgings with Swiss designs and flat-screen TVs; some with fireplaces and/or kitchens

The Rooms, Suites, Villas, and Townhouses at Zermatt Resort & Spa are decorated with Swiss-style country furniture, folk art, farm tapestries, and antler lamps, but some furnishings look outdated or worn. All units come with bathrobes, irons, safes, flat-screen or tube TVs, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Most bathrooms are simple and have shower/tub combos. Studios offer fireplaces and sitting areas, while Suites feature whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, kitchens or kitchenettes and patios or decks. One-, Two-, and Three-bedroom villas have patios, whirlpool tubs, breakfast nooks, fireplaces, and kitchens with oven/stoves, refrigerators, and dishwashers. Three-bedroom townhouses have dining rooms, hardwood flooring, fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, walk-in showers, kitchens, and laundry facilities. ADA accessible rooms are available.

Features

Steak dinners, cocktails, a Swiss bakery, and modern conference facilities

The Z’s Steak and Chop Haus is the resort's most elegant dining option, with wood ceiling beams, booth seating, patterned carpeting, and a black grand piano. Matty’s Bistro is casual, with wooden carved heart chairs, and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. The Backerei and Eis Bakery serves pastries, coffee, and panini sandwiches. The upscale resort is geared towards families and couples, but the 19 conference rooms also make it a good spot for company retreats. Conference rooms include a ballroom and a boardroom and can fit up to 1000 people. The restaurant and bistro can also be rented out. There’s also a business center with two PCs. The resort’s wide range of activities -- including two tennis courts, the on-site Adventure Haus with equipment rentals, a billiards room and a mini-golf course -- appeal to couples and families. The indoor pool, with a ceiling sky mural and indoor hot tub, is another popular resort attraction, and has a wheelchair lift and a deck with stylish lounge chairs. A swim passage flows into the outdoor pool and hot tub.  The large gym features modern cardio equipment, free weights, and numerous TVs, and yoga classes are held regularly. The classically designed spa offers a nail salon, locker room, fireplace lounge, sauna, and a steam grotto.
