Scene

Standard budget chain hotel with humble interiors

Let's be clear, there are plenty of budget chain properties that have stepped up their style game -- some Super 8 branches come to mind -- but others are lagging behind. This BEST WESTERN isn't the most dated hotel we've seen, but overall it's a generic place to rest for a night. A utilitarian lobby has one couch and a fireplace, and the general vibe is a bit empty and dark, with low ceilings and standard, chain hotel furniture. The front desk is frequently unmanned, and guests must ring a bell or call a phone number for service. While there is nothing fancy here, guests also won't find any nasty surprises -- the property is clean and rooms are spacious. Business
travelers from nearby corporations often stay here,
but there is no bar or restaurant for after hours socializing, and nothing in the immediate area either. The
indoor pool is a bonus for families, and the small hot tub may help guests
unwind after a day at corporate headquarters. This hotel is best thought of as a place to rest in between visits to
the local sights and beaches, or between meetings.

Location

In a quiet area, a short drive from Saugatuck, beaches, and other local attractions

The Best Western Plaza Hotel Saugatuck is located in a
quiet green area off the Blue Star
Highway, across the street from a cemetery. There is nothing to do and nowhere
to eat or shop within the immediate area. For guests with cars, the location is convenient for visits to
both Saugatuck and Douglas. It's a five-minute drive to Butler Street, where many of Saugatuck's quaint cafes and shops are located. The Saugatuck Dunes State Park is a five-minute drive from the hotel and Oval Beach and Lake Michigan are 10 minutes away by car. Clearbrook Golf Club is just one minute down the road, while it's a three-minute drive to The Red Barn, a local theater. The
Gerald Ford International Airport is 35 miles away, though the Western Michigan Regional Airport is a 12-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with homey decor and modern amenities

Rooms at the Best Western Plaza Hotel
Saugatuck are spacious, with one king or two queen beds, all with pillowtop
mattresses, and a cozy, homey style that's pleasant if not particularly memorable. Decor is standard across all room categories: mustard walls, brown square-patterned carpeting, dark wood veneer furniture, and warm area
lighting. Higher-category rooms have small tables with chairs and love seats, though upholstery is quite dated. All rooms include 40-inch flat-screen TVs with over a hundred channels, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Some
King Rooms come with whirlpool tubs. Bathrooms are large and modern, with shower/tub
combos, toiletries, and lots of counter space. Front-facing rooms overlook the
parking lot, while back-facing rooms have views of a quiet wooded area. This hotel has two stories, and guests
should be aware that there are no elevators. Visitors with mobility issues
should request first floor rooms before arrival. Wi-Fi is free, but can be slow.

Features

Indoor pool and hot tub, small fitness center, and free breakfast including waffles

The Best Western Plaza Hotel Saugatuck
features a medium-size indoor pool with an adjacent hot tub that's surrounded by
lounge chairs in a sunlit enclosure. Rooms come with free breakfast, standard
across the chain, that includes a cereal bar, a variety of breads and
pastries, eggs, and a make-your-own-waffle machine. There are snack and soda
machines on the property, as well as a coin-operated washer and dryer. The fitness center is small and cramped. It includes three cardio machines, but no
weights or other equipment. A computer with a printer is available, and parking and Wi-Fi are both free.
