The hotel’s Victorian decor may not appeal to everyone
The mid-range Best Western Greenfield Inn is a full-service pink Victorian-style hotel with lots of attractive amenities, located just off Interstate 94 between the airport and downtown Detroit. Its 209 rooms are clean and comfortable, but a bit dark and traditionally decorated. They’re well equipped with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Hotel highlights include a huge selection of vintage car photos, Mugly’s Food & Spirits, spacious indoor pool, fitness center, and sauna. It also has guest laundry facilities and meeting space. Free shuttle service is provided to the airport, nearby Henry Ford Museum, and other area attractions. Compare rates with the Comfort Inn Near Greenfield Village which, unlike the Best Western, offers a free breakfast.
Scene
A large hotel with a traditional decor and lots of automobile memorabilia
This stately bricked building is affectionately known as the Pink Palace for its bright pink paint job. It’s a sprawling complex that’s been expanded over the years, and has lovely grounds surrounding it. Its Victorian decor and delightful collection of over 600 photos of vintage cars is in honor of Henry Ford and the nearby museum that honors his achievements. Antiques and other traditional furniture and artwork decorate the lobby, which has low ceilings that make it a bit dark. The reception desk is made of dark blue marble, and the lovely restaurant has lots of wood paneling and old photos of Detroit. Some guests find the traditional decor unappealing, while others enjoy a glimpse of yesteryear. Travelers of all kinds stay at this busy but relaxed property, including some who simply want to experience the hotel itself.
Location
In Allen Park, about a 12-minute drive to the airport
The hotel is located in Allen Park just off the Detroit Industrial Expressway (Interstate 94), about midway between downtown Detroit (a 20-minute drive) and the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (12-minute drive). The Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, and Ford Dearborn Development Center are within 10-minute drives or free hotel shuttle rides away. The immediate area is mostly commercial, with some other hotels and several restaurants (a steakhouse and a few Mexican restaurants) a short drive away. A shopping center with a cluster of shops and restaurants is across the highway from the hotel, within about a seven minute-drive.
Rooms
With Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, and free Wi-Fi -- but a bit dark
Like the hotel’s public spaces, the rooms are decorated in a traditional fashion that uses darker shades of red on the bed throws, drapes, and some walls. The walls are painted in a dull tan that roughly matches the black square patterned carpets. The color combination, along with smallish windows and soft lighting, make the rooms a bit dark. But, high ceilings and plenty of space prevent the rooms from being overly gloomy. Standard King and Double Queen Rooms offer enough space for armchairs and desks or tables. Amenities are a big plus, with Keurig coffeemakers, safes, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, microwaves, and flat screen TVs. A variety of larger, studio-style Suites with sleeper sofas also are available. Bathrooms are average in size and feature roomy granite vanities and faux marble acrylic shower/tub inserts. Some suites have whirlpool tubs framed by pink marble. Views range from the grounds to the parking lot.
Features
Free airport/area shuttle, restaurant/bar, indoor pool, fitness center, meeting space, laundry room, and free parking
This large, full-service Best Western doesn’t offer a free breakfast like many hotels in the chain, but Mugly’s Food & Spirits is serves American classics for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Free coffee is available all day in the lobby. The gift shop also sells a good selection of snacks and soft drinks along with souvenirs and sundries. The business center is in a quiet spot off the lobby, and has a computer, printer, and office supplies. There are several event spaces, including a lovely outdoor courtyard with a gazebo and gas grill. The largest indoor meeting room is capable of holding up to 50 people. The spacious indoor pool is over eight feet deep at one end and is surrounded by covered tables and loungers on the pool deck. For working out, the fitness center is large and equipped with several pieces of dated cardio equipment and free weights, plus a sauna. The guest laundry room has multiple washer/dryer sets, and valet dry cleaning and laundry are among the concierge services. Weekday newspapers and Wi-Fi are free. Parking is free and the hotel operates a free shuttle service to the airport, Henry Ford Museum, and other area attractions, but not to downtown Detroit. Pets are welcome with a surcharge.
